Lower motor unit oil question

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have a 2 stroke 50 hp Mercury outboard that I'm changing the lower unit oil in within the next few weekends before taking it out again.

I have 0.5 quart left from last year and my question is, is it okay to use this same quart or does this oil go bad?

On the same note I have some left over marine grade grease that I used for the wheel bearings last year. Can I use this again as well?

Thank you guys!

P.s. this is my 2nd year with the boat so I'm still new

As long as it’s been stored properly, it should be just fine. I often have leftover gear oil that gets used the following year and I’ve never had any issues. Only thing I could see that could be bad would be if it was stored in a cold shed or garage that froze and thawed a bunch, leading to condensation being added into the mix.

i’m no expert but i’ve always saved partial bottles for next year, same goes for the grease.

As long as you left the cap on it there is no problem at all.
