starter battery?

Featured Replies

It seems harder to find maintenance free starting batteries. Everyone sells the deep cycle ones for trolling. Anyone have a suggestion for a maintenance free starting battery that is reasonable? Thanks.

Maintenance free?

Yes, The type that you do not have to add water. I believe they are AGM type. I do not like always adding water with spills, possible tipping, overfilling, boiling over, etc. The closed cell batteries also seem to last much longer.

Have you tried an Auto Parts Supply store like Auto Zone or O’Reillys?

Got it.  Blue Top Dual Purpose is what I used in my last boat.

They cost a bunch more too.  Optimas are really popular, particularly with the off-road crowd (they hold up well to vibration).  There are a bunch of other ones too - Napa https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/NBP9834M?partTypeName=Battery+-+Commercial+Gel+%2f+Marine+Gel&keywordInput=agm+batteries and others carry them, but most of the in-stock ones are Optimas.  I did see an Exide spill-proof at BJ's Wholesale one time - I think it was right around $125.

Go to Walmart, they got some good batteries at a good price.

If you do go major auto parts retailer, advance auto has a 20% coupon. You buy online, pick up in store and save 20 percent. It's how I buy all my batteries.

Not a fan of optimas but the Duracell ones at Sam's are hard to beat for the money

If you have an account I have found that if you browse for a few minutes but don't buy one they will send you an email offering 25% off. My current starting battery is from Advance because of their 25% discount code.

Can confirm.

Keep in mind that agm batteries charge different than regular acid batteries if you have a on board battery charger

Duracell 31 AGM at Sam's Club. They might still be on sale for $159 (usually $179) and are absolutely the best bang for the buck even at full price.
