salt water baits?

Featured Replies

Curious, What are some saltwater baits that you have found that work great for bass fishing?

Just about every one. I just don't tell the bass its a saltwater lure.  Paddletails are my favorite just to name one.

paddletail swimbaits, soft plastic jerkbaits, bucktail jigs, topwater plugs, twitch baits, spoons, spinnerbaits, hard jerkbaits...

Most salt water lures have very heavy zinc plated hooks not suitable for the average fresh water rod power. The 1 exception that stands out was the original Scrounger jig that works very good in fresh water with soft plastics. Nemire Red Ripper spoon is another lure that excels for fresh water bass fishing.

Fresh water lures that work in salt water is a much longer list.

I have a few twitch baits, but like Tom says - you have to swap out the hooks.

Most salt water soft plastics started in fresh water applications with a few exceptions.

The 1st salt water grub I know of was Jim Smiths Smitty Kelp Critter double curl tail in the early 60's. Smitty introduced hand poured soft plastics to the fresh water bass anglers, most notably the "green weenie" worm. Worm King in San Diego was another salt water hand poured kick tail "anchovy" 4" swimmer in the late 60's that introduced the dinosaur 12" & 16" trout Swimbait for bass anglers in the early 70's long before big swimbaits became well known. Tom Mann's early 70's Sting Ray grub was a salt water soft plastic before Mann introduced Jelly worms.
