Dobyns Sierra 734c

I started a poll on this a couple months ago. If you search it should come up. There are two camps, some think you need a moderate rod and others like a fast action. I ended up going somewhere in between with a loomis mbr 844. I tried the 843 and thought it was too light to fish around grass and vegetation where the chatterbait works the best.

Same here. I have the 6'11" and 7'2" versions (last years models). The moderate-fast tip on these things just feel so right. Best chatterbait rod I've ever used. 

I typically try to buy the best rod I can afford and try to avoid the cheaper stuff but I was recently at our Walmart and came across a rod called insight I believe it is. It's a Bret Chapman signature rod labeled as a spinnerbait rod. I only paid like $40 for it and I'll tell you its extremely light and loads perfect for spinnerbaits.

 

    I caught some giant smallies on it about 3 weeks ago and not one fish came unglued. It's just rated as fast action. To me it feels like a med heavy mod fast/fast. It is EXACTLY what I was looking for in a spinnerbait rod. Its 7 foot and rated for 1/4 - 1 ounce.  The only thing I do not care for is the reel seat. 

The most important thing I have seen is to be sure the rod action is matched up to the weight of the lure.  I throw a lot of 3/16 and 1/4 oz spinnerbaits where I fish and have the perfect rod for that.  When I went to a lake that called for half ounce spinnerbaits and large willow blades, the bait overwhelmed my setup.  I could still fish with it but it was particularly comfortable to do and def affected my accuracy.

I use a MH mod F 6'10 Lews TP1 tournament speed stick.....throws a variety of baits very well.

+1 on a Dobyns 703c, I use a Serria 703c for chatterbaits and squarebills.

Bought the Tatula Elite Howell MH "regular" (seems in between a mod and a fast) for chatterbaits, I prefer braid/leader for spinnerbaits and chatterbaits, so I like it better with some give in the tip. I'd recommend MH/F or H/F on mono/flouro, although as you get up in lb test it matters less - I had 20lb flouro on a cranking rod and decided to throw a chatterbait on it, worked fine.

 

Here's how I figured out where to start - I just started throwing a chatterbait on a bunch of the rods I had. The combos that felt mushy to me were any combo of rod with mono or flouro that was a slow action too. And the combos with braid and a fast tip were ok, but a little jarring, for lack of a better word. Maybe a little give is nice in how it rips out of weeds.

 

I think this one turns out to be personal preference on braid/mod or flouro/Fast.
