What G Loomis worm/jig rod should I get?

Featured Replies

Looking for a nice worm/jig rod to pair with my Shimano core 50mg7. I know G Loomis isn't what it necessarily used to be and a lot of people suggest other rods or custom built ones, but please only keep it to G Loomis. All of my rods are G Loomis and I just fish much more confidently with them even if that doesn't make much sense. I will be throwing 5" weightless Texas rigged senkos, Texas rigged brush hogs, 3/8 oz jigs (1/2 oz on occasion) into moderate cover (mostly grass beds and lily pads). I also fish my stock ponds quite a bit so keep that in mind if it changes your choice at all. I know a lot of people say NRX is what to get, but which one specifically would be ideal for pairing with my core 50mg7 and what I'll be throwing? Thanks!

I'm like you, and prefer G Loomis rods. 5' Senkos, 3/8oz jigs, 5/16/1/4oz t rigs, are all handled great by a 3 power IMX -Pro choose tour length 6'8" or 7'1".  I got lucky and got one of those limited edition 7'2" IMX-Pro JWR rods, and it's a hell of a jig, T rig, spinnerbait, swim jig rod.

If it was me and I was in your place, I'd opt for the  NRX 894. I think 893 would be a good fit for the baits, but I like the extra power for cover.

Yes those were the main two I was looking at when searching myself through the forum.

That limited edition IMX sounds nasty!

It's a killer rod. I caught two 6lbers this week on jigs, and man it's got that feel of reassurance when you set the hook.

894 likely if you want to go NRX. I've had the 853 for several years and it's probably just about the meanest 5" Senko rod around. I do not love it for jigs. 3/8 oz jigs are "fine" but I tend to stay at 1/4 oz and throw 3/8+ on a different rod. However I have read that the 893 has a smidge more power than the 853 so that may be an option.

893 is magic. Out of the baits and cover you suggested it can do thme all great the exception of the 1/2 Oz jig. I'm sure you could fish a 1/2 oz but I don't like the mushy overloaded feeling of it. I don't own an 894 to compare

I have the nrx 853 that I used specifically for senkos and it was perfect for it but I felt like 3/8 ounce jig and trailer would over power the rod so I decided to try the conquest 843c and it does both very well. I feel like it may not be as sensitive as the nrx but it does feel much more powerful and handles jigs/trailers with ease.

Although I don't think it's the best balanced NRX.. the 894

I have several E6X, GLX, NRX and Conquest.

For that purpose I have a NRX 852c with an Antares.

I use braid to leader on that one

I see it as a bridge between  a spinning rod and 3 power BC

893c/894c in nrx or glx. Just about perfect for what you describe.

I have the GLX 893 paired with the Core 50Mg.  You will like it, too!

853

I wouldn't throw a 3/8 oz jig plus trailer and especially not a 1/2 oz jig plus trailer on my NRX 853c, especially into cover. I throw lighter texas rigs and 1/4-5/16 jigs plus trailer. It seems waaayyy underpowered for anything else heavier. IMO.

For OP if you go NRX I'd go a 4 power if throwing 3/8-1/2 oz plus trailer.

Yes, that's the one I think I'm going with. Going to be a super light weight combo. Can't wait to try it out
