West Michigan Fishing after heavy rain/high water

Featured Replies

According to the Bass Forecast ratings and the lunar fishing calendar, the next few days are rated highly and I was looking forward to getting out there. However, the last few days have rained like crazy, and the water levels are very high.

Question: is it worth trying to fish in such conditions, if so, are the fish in their usual areas or does the heavy rain/high water level move them to unpredictable locations?

Any help is appreciated.

The first place I go is flooded brush with clean water.

With 2 dams failing and rivers above flood stage fishing is your least concern, stay safe.

I heard a 3rd dam failed further up river.  That said, I believe the OP is located well away from the chaos.

Safety definitely comes first; my golden retriever would be real upset if I didn't come home.

Luckily for me Glenn is correct; I'm around 100 miles WSW as the crow flies from the chaos. Just hoping no one up there gets hurt.

Thank you for your responses.

Thank you for your response.

Do you primarily work the edges of the brush line with something like a slow rolled spinner or crank, or get right into the thick of it with something weedless?

Yes. :)

A lot of the time, I throw a spinnerbait right into the flooded brush.  If that doesn't work, then I go to a jig.

Thanks a lot man. Took the day off and I'm headed out to give it a try!

Fishing was good in central Michigan yesterday! I enjoyed the fact that the shallow water warning signs at the lake I fished were under water. LoL

Went fishing again today near St. Johns, water was up about 3 feet and visibility was only an inch or two. It was fun to fish in the forest that was flooded but had no luck in there with a spinnerbait and Toadrunner.

However, was killing it in flooded bushes pitching a dark jig.
