Will a 6.3:1 Citica 201 work for Deep Cranking??

Featured Replies

I don't do a ton of cranking but I do want to be able to throw deep cranks. I recently picked up some Norman DD22's and a medium heavy moderate action st croix. Just wondering if this Citica 201 I have will work here? It has a 26" inch per turn which seems about right from what I have read.. but I'm not sure if this reel can handle pulling baits that will create so much drag.

Love to hear your thoughts.

Yes

Don't worry about it. It's a 5/8oz crank, not a 4oz jointed wake. It'll be fine. You've a got a double supported pinion and brass gears. I use my 6 speed Curado K occasionally for the same baits.

I use to use a 201 E for deep cranks and had no issues.   It was not the smoothest reel nor did it cast real far but it got the job done with 3/8oz to 5/8oz crank baits.

Oh yes with no problem.  Little brother to the Curado 200E series.

Hmmm, if you're talking about a musky crankbait,

that might be a smidgen too fast   ☺️

You can get a 5.5:1 set of drive and pinion gears for the Citica, if you feel that would be better for you.     jj

It will do the job fine. I really like the i series solid reels in my opinion.

I use a 6.8 to 1 reel. Just reel slow. I put a 95 mm handle on it. Also you can use the rod to move the bait just by sweeping it and reel in the slack. The slight pauses sometimes trigger strikes.
