A swim bait has become one of my pre-rigged (tied on ready to throw) baits these days.  I’m wondering how you guys, when you don’t know precisely what bait fish the bass are chasing on a given day, how do you choose what to throw as far as length and color?

 

Also, do you have success with them in muddy or stained water?

I usually have a Bull Shad and a Bull Gill to cover those, then a 168 S-waver in Lite Trout, Bone & New Bluegill. If the water is dirty or heavy stained, I am throwing big, noisy topwaters like the 190 Whopper Plopper or the Evergreen Noisy Dachs. I limit the big soft plastic baits to clear water.

I dont use swimbaits ever in low visibility water.  I also dont worry about what their eating.  In cold water I use huddleston boot tails and the like.  In spring I use glides, summer is big glide and multi piece hard baits.  It's just that simple for me because I dont want a headache when I fish.

I like a Slammer in dirty water.

 

I don't worry about what baitfish they're chasing. It's like any other bait, where you fish it matters a lot more than the color of the bait.

Have you tried the bull herring? Most of my fisheries have yellow perch as the main forage and their profile is pretty similar to a herring. Sadly it only comes in a white color but I could get it painted, always been really interested in trying it for pike and musky as well.

I've caught bass in chocolate milk on a boot tail Hudd..I think sometimes water clarity is taken to seriously.

Absolutely! Here are 2 that I just got back from BB Lures - Lite Trout and Baby Bass.
