Spare prop?

Featured Replies

Since I've got a trolling motor with a spare prop should I also have a main outboard spare prop.  Expense and storage concerns drive question.

I dont know how necessary it really is. I have one in my boat, but i bought it used amd the prop was already there. I probably wouldnt buy one for a spare personally. Ive been fishing my whole life and never needed one. Not that i never will. If you think you might need it go ahead.

I spun a hub in a tournament once.  Not sure what would have taken more time, changing the prop or going 5 mph to the weigh in.  My last two boats I had spare props and cotter pins.  Obviously, you'll want a prop wrench as well.

A spare prop is like insurance. Something you buy and hope you never have to use it. If you're  using a stainless prop, get an aluminum spare, if  price is a concern. You're only going to use it to get back to the ramp, then swap it out again

I you think you need a spare prop you probably do! Contact your local prop shop for a spare used repaired aluminum prop same size and pitch. Aluminum is lighter weight and 1/2 the price of SST prop.

I’ve been considering this myself too. I only have the factory aluminum prop on my outboard. It’s perfectly fine with only minor scratches (no dents or chipping) after 5 seasons but the thought of damaging it to the point where it’s basically unusable has crossed my mind.  I may just go buy a SS prop, put that on, and then use the factory aluminum prop as my spare.

Yikes. The new trolling motors are worth the coin for the features. I'm running the Garmin Force ?

But yes, I carry a spare prop for both as well.

I'm gonna run my minnkota till it breaks.  I've been blessed to have very little issues, other than replacing the prob twice

I don't carry a spare outboard prop.  Should I?  Maybe.  Tough to see me replacing the prop on the water though.  I don't fish tournaments anymore so I'm not sure how necessary it is.  My prop is stainless steel so unless it gets spun or I hit something hard I don't know that I'll need it.
