Type of bass?

Featured Replies

Sorry for the really terrible picture, but I was wondering if someone could help me identify what fish this is.  Are there any identifying features from this angle?  Perhaps a young smallmouth?

Thanks!

LOL It's all good. I'm the last person who would be considered a saint. I was named after a saint but that doesn't mean I am one.

Hopefully you know my response was sardonic (whatever that means).

I confess, I didn't even know there was a Saint Octavius      :Idontknow:

Saint Octopus? I might be schizophrenic, but I certainly don't have 8 personalities.

There are 9 black bass species and coloration isn't a common denominator to identify bass. The photo doesn't clearly show a side view, dorsal fin, jaw to eye location, scales at the base of the tail etc, etc.

Without knowing where the bass was caught, what regional area, it's not possible to make anything but a WAG!

There is a online test you can take to tell the different between a LM and a Spot... I never get a perfect 100% on it.  Like 90 lol

This was caught in a good sized reservoir in eastern Massachusetts, about 10 yards from the shoreline (3 inch plastic worm).  I'm pretty new to fishing in general and decided to just go on a whim a little bit ago.  Somehow I got lucky and caught a bunch of sunfish without really knowing what I was doing, but now I'm hooked.  Now I just need to learn how to take a better selfie while holding a fish :)

Just yesterday I hooked what looked like a much larger bass, but I lost it right as I was getting it out of the water.  I don't think I've been so frustrated in a long time!

Looks more like a shoal bass or red eye bass if from the southern region, Guadalupe bass if from Texas and a smallmouth I'd from the northern region.....who knows?

In a later post the OP mentioned he caught it in an Eastern Massachusetts reservoir. And he promised to learn how to take better pics and selfies in the future! ?
