Should I go with the basic Tatulas or SV?

Featured Replies

I’ve been fishing with a H20 mettle for around 6 years since I started fishing and decided it’s time to get something better. I’m a shore fisherman who likes to use any sort of jigs, topwater, jerkbaits, small swimbaits, etc on baitcasters. I rarely use crankbaits. Currently pairing a new reel to my Dobyn’s Fury 734C rod.

At first I was going to get the Tatula CT, but I’m wondering if the SV is worth the extra money. It seems really nice, but the casting distance may be a problem. I don’t flip and pitch with baitcasters very often.

Also had a random question: how do casting distances compare between the Tatula CT and Curado K?

the SV works well for casting light baits, skipping and pitching. If you want distance the CT will cast farther with heavier baits. I have both reels.

i use a CT for jerkbaits, crankbaits, spinnerbaits, etc. the fuego is not much different.

The SV is used for super flukes, worms, senkos and jigs.

Personally, if I was going to get an "all around", type reel from Daiwa, I'd get a Fuego for $30 less than the Tatula. I have a few and they're great reels. The Tatulas and SVs are very nice also, I save my SV for reels I want the cast control with though.

The Fuego is a great reel I use mine mainly for frogging. I do have a few *cough* CT's the 100, 150, and 200..Casting distance is solid, I don't have a Curado K to compare it to. I have owned older Curado's that were made in Japan, and loved em, a wild guess would be that they are pretty close.

I bought the Diawa's for a reason, great value reels for the $$$, as you can find below what the big online stores ask for them. I also fish mainly from shore.

I don't think the SV would be worth the money for you.  The SV spool makes the reel more specialized, and if you had a bunch of reels and needed to add one that was just for lighter lures or something, it might be worth the money to you.  But if you've just got the one other reel, then I wouldn't start looking to add specialized gear just yet.  Especially not if it costs more.

Take a look at the tatula 100.  Its a fairly light reel but has a solid frame.  I like it a lot because its small and really easy to palm.  You can find them on ebay or amazon for $125 all day.  If you check the prices everyday you can get them cheaper then that.  A couple months ago someone had the 8.1:1 tatulas for $94 with free shipping.  If you buy one from amazon or ebay make sure the seller has a good history and offers free returns, just in case.

Ordered one from sportsmanoutfitters.com for $109.99. Very curious as to how they get it for so cheap (heard they are a dropship company), but no one knows.

I've bought 2 reels from them, pretty fast shipping, and they came from sportsmanoutfitters.

I would just go with the Tatula 100 or the Tatula CT....the SV TW are great reels, but for what you are wanting I would just save that money....

X2 on what @Bluebasser86 said.  I own Tatula CTs, a CT-R, Fuego CTs, and one Tatula SV.  If you are in the need for the speciality that the SV provides then I highly recommend it.  If you just need the best baitcaster for the money, buy yourself a Fuego CT.  The Tatulas that lie in between the SV and the Fuego CT are just pretty.  Seriously, my CT-R is really good looking but it offers nothing in the way of performance that I don't get with my Fuego CTs.  At least not at my skill level.

The SV will do everything the 100 does, and does it a lot better. Can pretty much skip over everything in between. In particular since you are only carrying a rod or two, getting as much versatility as you can will matter. SV was the next thing I bought after getting a fuego. Fuego is fine, but the SV really shines throwing light baits or throwing into the wind, and will sling a rattletrap or a jerkbait a loooong way. 20mph wind might have you turn up the brakes one click and cast lower to the water. And if you forget and do a big overhand cast into the wind you'll get a little fluffing from the wind but nothing major.

Tatula 100 should be 100-110 on sale, SV's around 150-160.

The 2017-2019 SV is really nice, and you can likely pick one up used for a great price. The 2020 is a nicer form factor (smaller) but doesn't feel as well-built.

IMO a used 2017-2019 is probably the best buy out there.

I just purchased a Tat 100 for around that price point. I’ll be placing this reel on a heavy dobyns rod so the lightest lures I’ll be casting are 1/4 oz. If I notice the Tatula 100 is too similar with my h20 mettle (unlikely, but it casts a pretty good distance and I handle it well for techniques like flipping), I might as well return it and upgrade to an SV.

Considering you've stuck with your reel for 6 years now, spend the extra $ and get the SV.  Its a better casting reel.  Yes as mentioned above if you are throwing big crankbaits, jerkbaits, etc the normal CT will do.  But if you ever decide to throw lighter jerkbaits, soft plastics, or throw when its windier out the SV will help reduce backlashes and IMO is a more versatile reel.  I'm like most the guys above and have multiple Daiwa reels and again if I had to only use one it would be the SV.  Fuego is a great real for the price and I bought one to try.  It doesn't cast as far as my Tatula SV/CT's and now is my designated frog reel.  I can't comment on the Curado K, but did have a Curado 70 and a Curado I series before and would fish the Tatula's more.  I did recently get a Shimano SLX DC model as a gift, but haven't taken it out of the box yet.

Which ever daiwa you end up with you should open it up and grease the gears...I've bought 4 in the last 12 months every one of them was bone dry.
