Lure Selection- Spinnerbait vs Swim Jig

Featured Replies

I think of a spinnerbait and a swim jig as similar lures- but it’s usually a coin flip over which one Id pick.  Is one a better option in certain seasons or conditions?  Is there one you consider a better all around bait?

Living in Kansas, wind is my deciding factor.

I always have one of each tied on when I go kayak fishing.

I throw both, but my first selection will be a spinnerbait every time. I've caught more fish on those vs a swimjig.

Use what works best for you.

For me wind, clarity, and profile size... I keep a double willow tandem tied on year round.  I keep some sort of jig on year round.. just one if those things I'll figure out on the water. Same thing with a soft swimmer, all three are attempts to mimic a baitfish... I like the soft swimmers and swim jigs on super slick water

Swim jigs for me. I've never once caught on a spinnerbait of any sort.

At least I can get a swim jig to produce once in a while.

Swim jig is that in between windy and slick calm condition for me atleast.

...or when I just can’t stand to throw a worm anymore...

Check out Tom Monsoor for real advice

I usually have both on the deck and let the fish tell me which one they prefer on that day.

I'll throw a spinnerbait first if it's cloudy or windy, or murky water.  Otherwise it's the swim jig.

Swim jig for me first because it’ll go through cover better than a spinnerbait.
If it’s cloudy and breezy I’ll try the spinnerbait but if bright and sunny I’ll start with the swim jig. Always have both tied on but have been having better luck with the swim jig over the spinnerbait lately.

Swim jig is more subtle...I throw it when fish are pressured or in cleaner water...summertime when it's hot as well. I throw a spinner bait in rainy/cloudy or windy conditions when you can use that extra vibration. Stained to muddy water I throw a Colorado blade spinnerbait.
