Swivel on WP

I've never had line-twist issues with WPs on my BC rig.

Direct tie, no swivel.  I see people doing this with spinners/bucktails and all it does is kill the action.

If your line is twisting, that.usually indicates the whole body is spinning.

The tail is all that is supposed to spin. The wp 90 is notorious for spinning if you are reeling fast and have a lot of line in the water.

Best way to keep it from spinning is, hold the rod tip up to keep the line off the water.

Also slow down a little on the retrieve. You can also check between the tail and body. Make sure the tail is spinning freely.

Exactly the size I was tossing.

All it takes in one spec of grass or debris to get between the prop and the body. If this happens at the beginning of a long cast, your line will be wrecked (unless you're throwing braid). I always have a quality swivel in-line with any of the plopper style baits. It does not affect the action.

If you’re using braid then definitely use a quality swivel !

Not necessary - my old WP rig was 20# Power Pro tied direct...still had no issues with line-twist. It's all in how you work the lure.

Is necessary actually. Especially with braid, plenty of videos on YouTube about this as well . Whopper plopper even fished slow will roll and if the tail stops from any debris, the whole thing will roll as you bring it in and with braid it will ruin it .  Hence why a swivel is a good solution to this.

Well, I haven't had any of those issues...so will continue to tie direct with no swivel until something does happen.

And this is with 90s - supposedly the worst of the lot.

I fish the Whopper Plopper on braid without a swivel and without any line issues.

If I did have line-twist issues, I'd probably kiss the Whopper Plopper goodbye (Sorry Larry).

Do you add a swivel on your WP set up for the line twist?

This question has been asked before. A swivel does nothing to affect the action, but may pull the nose down a bit on the 90 which has a problem with that from the start. The WP doesn't cause line twist if the prop is clear. If the prop catches debris and stops spinning the entire bait will spin. I've wrecked 2 spools of braid when this has happened. I set up all my WPs with swivels now and haven't had an issue since, except for about a week and a half ago. I picked up a Loon WP 75, rushed out without attaching a swivel, then wrecked a spool of 15lb Big Game on a bomb cast. The water looked clear, but I caught some fine grass in just the right spot. 3rd time's the charm.

Had the same question after last week.  With all the boat traffic on the lakes now, the weeds are chopped up into tiny floating pieces.  Those tiny pieces get caught on the hook or the blade and away it goes spinning in on the cast.  I am not fishing in weeds!  Just picking up little sporadic pieces.  I have to try a swivel.  Glad some of you have done this with success.  Do you use a snap swivel attached to the lure or tie a swivel inline and then tie direct to the WP?   I really would love to have the direct snap swivel work.  It will also allow me to change colors and sizes much easier.  I never use these on anything so it will be new to me.

I fish the 90 a ton, with straight braid and no swivel. It isn't necessary. Maybe how some like to fish it, but it's just added weight dragging down the nose of a bait that needs to be pointed up.
