PowerPro Braid 50lb - Spooling issues?

Featured Replies

Hey all - new to the forum and new to PowerPro braid (150yds/50lb) - braid in general. I just pickup up a spool so I could try out a heavier braid line and I don't know if it was just this pack, but I found it pretty difficult to load onto my reel. The braid seemed to keep getting caught up on the edge of the plastic spool (why are those two cutouts there?) or just not releasing from the rest of the braid causing the plastic spool to lift up and flip over sometimes. I kept the line tight open loading it on, but it took way longer than it should have. It was almost like it had to be mounted and secured in order for it to spool properly.

Not sure if it was just me or known issue...

Here's shot of the cutout notches on the side of the spool:

It's pretty typical with spooling up any line as they all have cutouts of one sort or another on their supply-spools. Just something you have to deal with.

Good morning, Dave. ( sorry .... I had to say that. Stanley Kubrick fan.) Welcome to BR!

It kinda sounds like you're trying to put this on a spinning reel, because you say the spool would flip over sometimes. You also said that it seemed the spool had to be mounted and secured. I seems you're describing the system of spooling line on a spinning reel, where the spool is laid down label up on the ground and then transferred.

Unless you're using a BIG SALTWATER REEL AND FISHING IN THE OCEAN, I can't imagine using 50 lb. braid on a spinning reel.

OTOH, spooling braid (or mono) on a baitcaster USUALLY involves just what you mentioned; affix the spool to a horizontal dowel and transfer line overhand-out to overhand-in. I've done it other ways in a pinch, but it's not as easy or consistent.

Don't lay the supply spool down flat and wind your line onto a baitcaster. You're putting twist in it that will give you fits down the road. It works for a spinner, but not a caster.

   Hope this helps.  ?   jj

Thanks, gents - yeah, I didn't have it mounted on anything to hold the spool down so it was flopping all around - I'll rig something up, I always used larger spools of mono, so I guess them being heavier and the line coming off easier was just what I was used to. Using a spinning reel - wanted to fish in some areas where it's loaded with grass and logs, so I wanted to go heavy.

Oh, and thanks for the welcome!

Wives and pencils solve that kind of problem.

Don't think your going to be a fan of 50# braid on spinning tackle.

Save it and reel it off onto a baitcaster and make it your frog rig.

Which size spinning reel are you using, if I may ask?        jj

Okay - ya - agree with the others. 50# braid on a spinning reel...unless it's a 5000 size I'd avoid that. 20# would be plenty on a spinner - heavier than that, go to a baitcaster.

Welcome to the forum by the way.

Okay - I might put 30# on a 4000-size spinner...but that would be my max. I have a 3000 size and if I went to braid...20#...I don't put braid on spinners myself - but to each their own.

Try it and see how you like it.

20# power pro works well for my spinning reels, most are 3000 series.

Stick a pen through it and put it between your feet. It will unroll, in stead of unwind. If that makes sense. Just like a brand new extension cord for example. With shoes on of course.

Heres a video of Gerald Swindle putting braid on his spinning rod, starts about the 2:30 minute mark.

He details what happens when you do not have a dedicated spooling station or you are not getting enough distance on your casts. hahahaha lol

15 or 20 years ago, I was a spectator at a distance casting competition. (I know, I know .... boring stuff.)  In the spinning section, one of the competitors had a rod with only 5 guides on it. I asked her why, and she said that more guides or fewer guides, either one, reduced distance. The guides were tuned to the line and the rod, both. They were wrapped but not sealed, which made them easy to adjust.

Those competitors routinely cast over 200 yards.               jj

Interesting! That's what you get for reading the manual! Thank you!
