1.5 on a medium heavy?

Featured Replies

I’ve been debating on what rod to get for 2.5’s,1.5’s, and lipless cranks. I think the dobyns champion xp cranking rod in the 705 with a moderate fast tip. I’ve heard it’s got really good bend but I feel like a 1.5 is to small for that rod. I’ve heard dobyns makes their rods a little lighter than advertised though. I’ve tried a 7’6 medium heavy moderate fast and it cast and hooked into fish just fine but it felt too long. I’ve tried a medium fast but it didn’t give a delay in the hookset which put one treble in the fish. I lost so many fish. So that is why I think the dobyns champion do cranking rod in 705 is best. I’m moving to California and I watched tactical bassin’s vid and they use the same rod for 1.5 and 2.5’s. I also like throwing cranks near grass, so that medium heavy will help me horse those fish out. Just as a bonus could I get away with throwing 4.0’s on that rod? Thank you for the responses.

Back when I used Dobyns the 735 Glass was my rod I threw 1.5s On with no issue.  Worked fine on th CA Delta

I rarely venture away from a medium rod for any cranking.  I only throw crank baits on 10 or 12 lb Invizx.

I just feel like a medium is to flimsy for a dobyns with even a moderate fast tip. I just feel like for lipless baits too I can’t rip threw grass well. And on that 1.5, I can’t even move them out of grass if I even hook one.

Make a call to Dobyn's rods  and talk with them, they will tell you which  rod matches best to your specifications.  They are great to work with.

Can't comment on if it'll handle the 4.0's but Dobyns cranking & flipping rods use a different rating system than the rest of the line-up. What you're thinking of as MH might be different than the MH labeled on that rod.

For what it's worth that rod will handle 1.5's no problem, but if you have doubts just do what @Heartland said and give them a call.

I throw 1.5 on med heavy rods any time I'm around grass.

I used to throw 1.5 & 2.5’s on my 705cb with mono (yozuri 12# hybrid) and found I was losing a lot of fish to what I believe was too much stretch, after switching to 30lb braid/leader my hook up and landing ratio became very high. It’s feels now as if its got a perfect blend of give and hooking power. The 705 with mono it feels like fishing with a old rubber band to me.

The 705 is not ideal for the 4.0, lures approaching an ounce will likely need to be lob casted.

705cb graphite or glass is perfect for 1.5/2.5. Not a good 4.0 rod

BTW, look at the new Strike King 1.5 Hard knock.
