Please Help!! Bryson City, NC.

Featured Replies

I am going to Bryson City September 3rd to the 6th.  I want to fish.  I have no access to a boat and will typically fish early morning.  I have no clue on where to go, what to fish for, or even what to bring.  I am staying near Nantahala Village.  If anyone could give me some advice that would be great.  Thank you all for your time.

We vacation there yearly so my experience is limited.  If you are looking to wade fish for trout, the Tukaseegee River flows through Bryson city and into Fontana Lake just west of Bryson City.  If fishing for trout, be sure to stop in at a tackle store (there's one near the train depot) to get the rules on where you can fish and what lures you are allowed to use (single hook or otherwise).  NC is confusing on when, where, what and how for trout.

Fontana Lake can be fished for all other fish where the Tukaseegee joins it, but due to winter draw down, steep banks make for very limited access to the water.

There are quite a number of mountain lakes around that area and my suggestion would be use Google Earth as a resource (lakes near bryson city, nc).  Sorry I can't be more specific.

Lake Santeetlah is a particularly beautiful lake, and has some picnic and camping areas around it, which should provide access for fishing.  A bit of a drive from Nantahala village.

Same here I have been going there for the last 5 years.  My father in law owns a cabin.  However, its usually during Christmas.  This will be my first time going where I can adventure out.  I don't like the cold but I am not going to be miserable either.

As a last resort there’s a trout farm I took my grandkids to that’s between Cherokee and Bryson city off 19 at the little community of Ela. Take coopers creek rd all the way to the end. It wasnt much if a challenge but fun for the G-kids to catch trout. ( And great eating too)?

So I did some fishing.  I caught a 1.5 and missed one.  That was my only excitement.   Everyone was mainly trout fishing, and was doing well.  I could have done the same.  However, I just love bass fishing.  I started with a popper not a single hit.  Switched to a shakey head with nothing.  So I grabbed a white spinner bait and seen a tree laid over in the water.  First cast caught my only fish.  Walked around some more made a random cast.  Get a hit while I went to answer my phone.  Stayed a little longer with no success.

next time you go up there go out after dark and throw a jitterbug if you are fishing on fontana. get as close to water as you can and parallel it down the bank back to you. fontana is one of the best night fishing topwater lakes in the country
