Hook into a 50 pound or bigger fish on bass tackle and you will quickly learn why a nice reel is worth having. If you are only targeting sub 10 pound fish than you might be ok with the cheapy made stuff some Youtubers are overhyping. As for line 20 pound or less braid should be ok for open water bass fishing but not the best choice for those who fish in heavy aquatic vegetation.

For many it can help them catch a fish of a lifetime. Fishing in heavy aquatic cover is very different from fishing open water.

I use mostly 30-50 pound braid or 8-20 pound test mono for most of the bass fishing I do.

 

60# on my frog rod.  #40 is the heaviest on other reels that carry braid.  Use 30# and 40# fishing lily pads.  8# mono/co-polymer on most Medium rods and 12# of same on MH rods.

A lot of bass fisherman like 60 pound test braid for frogging. As long as you catching big bass than it is working well for you.

Next time I visit Florida I am going to also take my Gen1 STX with 40# braid.  Give it a try on the rod as well.  Last year was the first time I used the rod, and I used a Curado 201E7.

I was crappie fishing the other night and a herd of bass came in to see what was for lunch, we caught several that we're around 3lbs on 4lb test.... So I lt just depends exactly what you are doing, on my spinning rod I use 6-12lb braid.... On this new bad ass shimano baitcaster .....um no thanks I'll pass.... It has 12lb fluorocarbon on it I've used braid for years but I'm not that brave....lol

We don't have DD bass here - state record LMB is just shy of 9#.

What we DO have is lots of slop along the shore.

My main moving baits/jig rig has 40# braid

Both with 12# leaders

i actually had 20lb braid bury in on itself on my Lews speedspool.  it's barely noticeable, but i noted erratic casting.  its just enough on my reel to jack things up.  i unspooled it thinking i could reel it all back in "gentle like", but it was tacky feeling to the bottom of the reel.  i took it out and put in 12lb sunline flouro.

 

i'll go 30lb braid next time to try it.  i am learning as i go.

20 lb braid is some thin stuff. Ive snapped it a lot more than I have 8 lb mono

40 pound test braid is a good choice. It is nice to be able to pull a big bass out of heavy aquatic vegetation and not worry about the line breaking.

20# Power Pro on casting. 

15# Power Pro on spinning......never an issue with digging. 

Perhaps I need to target larger fish ?

20 lb Power Pro braid is advertised to be .009 diameter. Braid being yarn it's not exactly round and tends to flatten more oval shape. New close tolerance bait casting reels can handle .009 Diameter line some can't. Spinning reel have no issues with .009 diameter line. You don't need 20 lb test strength line for 95% bass fishing, not a bass Rod made can lift that much weight.

Ive learned that i catch more fish on a spinning reel with 10lb braid with 10lb leader on a spinning reel. But 20lb will work
