Tatula 150 vs 200 for small glides/swimbaits.

Featured Replies

Thinking about getting into the glide/swimbait world.  Interested in throwing some Waver 120/168, Ima glide flukes etc.

Interested in getting a Irod Genesis 3 Swimbait Jr and possibly a Tatula 150 or 200.

I know that the 200 has a deeper spool.  Will the glides/swimbaits benefit from the deeper spool?

Should I go with the 150 or 200?

Any info is appreciated.  Thanks.

I also have the Irod swimbait jr rod, which I throw up to 7" glides, and 6" Hudds. I chose the Tatula 200, and so far it does a good job. I do have a 150, but I like the line capacity on the 200. For line, I use 17 lb mono. You could probably get by with thw 150, but.........

Appreciate the info!

Since you have the rod I’m interested in, how do you like it?  I know nothing about it but heard nothing but good things regarding irod.  I know a lot of people have the Genesis 2 but it seems like the Genesis 3 just came out?

I'm very happy with the rod, as I am with my other Irod's.

I have both reels, and the width of their spool's are the same, but the 200's is deeper. I'm throwing those baits on a Champion 794SB which is similar in length to the SB Jr., but with a slightly longer handle. One of the reasons I'm getting the Irod myself is for it's 17" handle. It'll be better for me on the yak.

That said, both rods are 7'8 or so, but because of the longish handles the length from the reel to the tip is just over 6 feet. Even with the leverage gotten because of the longer handles, you're only working with so much here. Given the weight of the baits you'll be throwing combined with the usable length of the rod, you're not going to be making truly monster casts with it. Far yes, but nothing like what you'd get when using a 9 footer. So the 150 will be fine on a rod of this length, even with .017 diameter line. I doubt you'll get far enough down into the spool on a long cast to make the 200 worth getting.

I have a Tat 300 also, and have had a Lexa, and it's my opinion that Magforce Z is of little benefit while chucking big baits. It's definitely helpful when throwing wind catching crank baits though, so the 150 opens up options with lighter baits that the 200 won't throw as happily.

Another vote for the 200. I really like my 150's, but the 200's are better suited for what you're trying to do and is big enough that you can step up to even a bit larger baits in the future as well if you want.  You're not going to be able to throw a 120 S waver on a swimbait rod anyways, it's more of a crankbait rod sized bait.

Different brake systems between the two as well.  The deeper 200 spool does not support Magforce-Z

What exactly does it have then, the previous version which was just called Magforce?

Is Z that much better?

It lacks the centrifugal componet to the Magforce Z magnetic braking.  The deep spool means the ID is too narrow to support Magforce Z actuator.  The inductor no longer extents outwards as the spool accelerates and is fixed in place.  It will have a similar braking profile to a Black Max, Revo X, current LFS ect but with a much larger diameter and deeper spool for increased capacity.  If just lobing big baits then this is probably fine (Tatula 300 is also Magforce and well liked for big baits) but if trying to bomb frogs or deep cranks I would strongly avoid this braking system and opt for a 150 when looking for a higher capacity Tatula 100 if you don't mind the width of the reel.  The 150 is the relaunch of the old 2013 100 and the 200 a relaunch of the old Tatula HD (not the 153 HD).  Plenty of info about the reels and a proven platform.

Thanks for that info. I've been divided in choosing between a Tatula 200 or Lews Super Duty Wide for umbrella rigs.

The 200 for more consistent inches per turn on retrieve.

Not until the point where the 150's spool is completely dumped, and that aint happening with the baits he's throwing on the rod he's talking about. Like I said earlier, their spools are the same width. You'd be correct if the 200 had a wider spool, but it doesn't. If consistent IPT after a long cast is the priority here, the Lew's Super Duty 300 Wide spool is the overall better choice.

The 150 and 200 are practically the same reel other than the difference in spool depth and Magforce vs MagZ.

The 200 is on the left.

The 150 is also available in a 5 spd PG(power gear) model. @Bluebasser86 makes a good point that the 200's the better choice if he wishes to go towards bigger baits down the road. My point was that @Revival would be better off using the 150 when he's throwing the lighter baits he'd mentioned. Personally I have no issues throwing a 1oz glide bait on the 794SB. In the end neither suggestion is wrong, just different.

Thank you everyone for the info and replies.  I ended up going with the Tatula 200 for the swimbait rod ....but also purchased two 150’s for other rods.  We’ll see how they do!
