Improved clinch knot issue

Featured Replies

I’ve been having trouble when tying an improved clinch knot to a split ring. When tightening the knot keeps slipping out. Doesn’t happen when I tie to a hook or jighead. Maybe because the split ring is thicker? I’m using 5 wraps

can you switch to a palomar knot?

I was having problems with the improved clinch knot slipping with slick monofilament lines like Sufix siege and elite but once i switched to the palomar i can't break it.

Not sure why you're having an issue, but a Uni knot is similar and is what I use.  A palomar can be difficult to get around a bait that uses a split ring.  This doesn't help, but I replace split rings with Duo-loc snaps, and that is easy to tie a palomar.

Look up Trilene knot . Its  tied almost the same as the improved clinch  . I use it over 90 per cent of the time . In "knot wars " thats  a youtube channel , it tied with the palomar as the strongest knot . I dont have  an issue with it slipping  except with braid .

You haven’t found it to have a negative impact on the lure? Especially suspending jerkbaits.. and I assume you remove the split ring too and just attach duolock?

No negative, and in fact less fouling and better action.  Yes, I remove the split ring.

I probably do 10 spins. I have no issues.  I do 10 because I don’t count them out so I just overkill it.  When I get lazy I do get a knot that will slide apart.

crazy. This is the first knot I learned as a kid.  My fingers just have it memorized

Thanks will give it a try

I’ve had this issue tying smooth monos like trilene xl to a split ring sometimes. Make sure you wet the knot and add a couple more turns.

I use improved clinch knot for all my hook and lure ties that I don't want to loose, make sure you do it correctly and add couple wraps and it shouldn't slip, also cut your tag ends a hair longer and see the result.

I think you need to add a wrap or two, and make sure to try and keep the wraps neat when you cinch it down. The only time I’ve ever had trouble with the improved clinch is when the wraps kind of bunch up. If I see it do that now I cut it off and re-tie it. The knot should look like a neat stack of coils or wraps on the line when it’s done.
