Tree filled lake

Featured Replies

Fished a lake yesterday that probably over 600 trees at all depths you could see some stick quite far out of the water even in 50 foot depth range and of course many under the water. I but motored by trimming all the way up just where I had a strong stream of water coming out still (probably going 1 to 1.5 mph) many people was going 3-5 am I just taking it to easy any advice on how to navigate water like this? Without causing Any harm to the motor

Stay in boating lanes or go slow.

No boat lanes, Would it be perfectly ok to hit the trees going under 2mph?

I guess that leaves with one option. Uh, no. The object is to not hit things.

I guess you could hit the trees if you like rowing and spending money on repairs.

I fish Toledo Bend & Sam Rayburn, they're full of trees, & while there are boat lanes to get to the bass ya gotta exit the boat lanes.

First accept the fact you're going hit one of the ones you can't see.

I don't trim my motor that far up, I want boat control with throttle response. Get stuck on a stump & you'll understand why.

Look at a detailed lake map like Navionics w/1’ elevation.

Find the river channel or large creek channel, trees don’t grow in channels and make a good pathway to fish and navigate through trees.

Otherwise aluminum boats help to reduce damages.

I fish several lakes like this.  While not ideal for traveling long distances, the best way to get where you are going is to put on a good pair of polarized glasses and stand on the trolling motor.  If you are using the big motor you are playing bumper pool whether you want to or not.

I fish a lake like that and it's a complete maze to get through. There's no way to navigate without hitting branches, logs, and stumps. There's no lanes cut and the lake is less than 20 years old so lots of cedars and trees with limbs still on them. I use my johnboat and go slow or use the trolling motor, but bumping trees still happens.

I have a couple of lakes like that that I fish.  Both have boat lanes but out of the lanes it's a jungle.  When I'm out of the lanes I'm on the trolling motor at low speed and try to thread my way through.  If I get stuck I'm usually able to back off by ramping up the TM but sometimes I have to fire up the outboard to back off.  The bottom of my older tracker was beat to heck from running over stumps and tree tops while running the O/B.  My new tracker I'm trying to keep in better shape.  So far no dents, just minor scratches on the bottom after three years.
