Daiwa Dx rod what rating to get?

Featured Replies

Hi guys. I’m just getting into swimbaits and planning on getting a Daiwa dx. I mainly want to throw 1-6 oz lures. S wavers, huds, I slides, etc. Would heavy be enough or should I get the X Heavy? I heard the rating isn’t that accurate. I’d greatly appreciate the help! Thanks

Heavy should fine. I fish 5 DXSB rods and really like them.

Would you happen to have the MH version?  The published lure ratings for the MH is 1-6 oz.  While I want to dip my toe into SB, I am not sure that I want to dedicate a setup strictly for it.   I was wondering what your thoughts on this rod being multipurposed as a deep cranking rod as well as for swim baits.  That way I can dabble in both.

I do own the MH and works great with 10XD sized crankbaits but it's really maxed out at 4 oz swimbaits and struggle driving jig hook baits like Hudds.

In your opinion, can the heavy throw a 6XD even though it is officially rated for 2-8 ounces?

Swimbaits rods should be evaluated by the nominal lure weight being close to the max weight.

Nominal is determined by adding low and high 1 + 6 = 7 div by 2 = 3.5 nominal.

68 and 8” Hudd are marginal using any swimbait less then Heavy.

You can cast 1 oz lures with a Heavy SB rod it will more work then it’s worth. Hook setting a top heavy wire hook with a MH SB rod will be more misses then successes.

So you’re basically saying I probably will not be that happy trying to multipurpose this rod for swim baits and deep cranks?

Make a list of the swimbaits and crankbaits you plan to use.

Look up the weight of each lure and hook type.

This will help you decide what rod and reel will perform for you.

My experience says you'd be better off using a slightly overpowered rod for a 10XD than a slightly underpowered rod for a Hud.

Greetings. Made the move to big swimbaits this year. I use a 8' Daiwa DX XH with a Shimano Tranx 301A & 20lb sufix tritranium & sometimes izorline xxx super co-poly. The baits I throw are river2sea 168 s-wavers, g-ratt sneaky Petes, Hudd 68s & Hudd 8" trout, 8" magdrafts, savage gear 3D shine glides & pulsetail trouts. This big swimbait thing can get very crazy as there are $400 lures out there (roman made mother) & $150 topwater rats. You have to be prepared mentally to meet the skunk on some days but on some days quality is much better than quantity.

The Daiwa DX XH is rated for 3-10 oz. lures.  The R2S S-Waiver 168 weighs 1 5/8 oz.  You do not have any problem loading up the rod with it?  I have also read that their are lure rating accuracy questions about the Daiwa DX like the OP mentioned and would like more clarity.  The price point on the rod is very attractive for me especially if I get it on sale.  I will not get hurt too bad if I decide this big swimbait thing is for the birds.

I don't have any problem bombing s-wavers. Great setup for me. There are numerous swimbait rods out there for every budget. Just do a little research. G Loomis, Dobyns 806, Okuma guide select, Irod genesis, Huddleston deluxe & savage gear are only a few as well as some great custom sticks.
