I've read that enough times that I don't doubt it, but here in Northeastern NY, they hit almost any lure, fight like crazy for about five seconds, then come dragging in on the surface with their mouth open, scooping water.  If they didn't have their mouth open creating that extra drag, you'd think they got off...

I was just on Irondequoit Bay last week and they wouldn’t give up. Even after they were in the boat

I caught a slew of them a few seasons ago at Mahopac Lake. On that day they'd hit hard, fight for a second or two, then pancake. Like reeling in a potato chip.

This PB rock bass that I caught in lake maxincuckee in 2019 fought pretty hard!
