flouro for squarebills

Featured Replies

What size flourocarbon line does everyone use for shallow squarebill crankbaits?  I usually only use the 1 and 1.5 squarebills.  If using braided line will there really be much difference in how deep the squarebill actually dives or how it behaves underwater?

I use 12lb mono. I don’t like braid for treble hooks, but with a leader, it’d be 20lb braid to 12lb floro leader. So if I used floro I’d use 12lb.

Anything from 8-12lb.  8lb will get down a bit deeper if you need that.  12lb will help with hangups.

Braid should go deeper if it's the same pound test, due to it being much thinner and having less resistance.  Fluoro should go deeper if it's the same diameter, due to being smoother and heavier.  So it'll sink and have less resistance.

i dont go under 15lb mono. but i use shallow squarebills for just that. its target fishing for me. i dont worry about how deep it goes. i believe mono lets the bait pop off cover better.

I use 10-15lb, but I use mono or copolymer, no need for flouro for squarebills IMO unless you jus feel like spending extra on your line.

here in minnesota where pike are everywhere i use 80 lb fluoro leader. Wife caught bass on the square bill yesterday and of course a pike. The 80 lb leader doesnt affect wifes or my abiity to work the lure. Crank it down and run it or let if float up no problem.
