No ammo, but...

Just got home from Cabelas. Last time I was there a couple months ago they had zero handguns and a handful of long guns and shotguns. Today the shelves were 3/4 full. A ton of long guns, shotguns and AR's. Pretty good selection of pistols and zero revolvers. Unfortunately for me, no Mini 14's or LCR's

Ammo is slowly catching up also.  I order approximately 500,000 rounds of .40S&W, .45ACP, and 9mm every year along with about 100,000 rounds of .223/5.56.  We just started a new contract with a vendor on July 1 and that vendor has plenty of .223 and is starting to catch up on .40 and .45.  The manufacturers are saying 9mm is still 6-10 months out from recovering but it's all good news.  

 

 

I was at BPS in East Peoria today and they had a box or two of .45, a dozen total of a few types of .40, a few boxes of 10mm and some pricey Federal 9mm. None but the .40 was range ammo but good to see something on the shelves. There was .223, 5.56, and some assorted other rifle calibers there. Agree it's good to see things in store again even if it means fighting the temptation of all the pretty new pistols in the case.

Still finding a lot of 2 box maximums, but the guys behind the counter as if I want to pick up boxes for my wife, kids, and brothers ???

I dunno.  I've heard of instances where people would buy a firearm solely because they could still find ammunition for it.  This may be hyperbole but I think it's still going to be a while before you'll be able to reliably find ammuniton and without having to put a second mortgage on your home to pay for it.

Could always reload your own. I’ve noticed those supplies are not nearly as scarce.

I haven't bought ammo in some time. I have enough target rounds to last awhile. The round has no idea if it's going thru paper or flesh. 

Years ago I went the AK route specificly for a ammo.

I was able to get cases from the Czech Republic, Russia, and Poland.

I am good for several lifetimes.  A 1200 round case was 125.00 +/-

 

I have seen a few stores completely restocked on guns and certain ammo. Just picked up a new shield plus and have been seeing some 9mm restocked as well. Still isn't cheap though ?

I saw 9mm ammo yesterday for the first time in months. It was $20 for 50 rounds which is a bit pricey and there was a 5 box limit. I have enough for now so I didnt buy any.

 

What I’m really having trouble finding is pheasant hunting shotgun shells. I’ve literally been looking since the season ended last December and haven’t found any.

Idk about that primers are next to impossible to find. Powders are slow to come by also I’ve been checking the local shops for primers a few days a week on way home from work and for powders. Always have pistol and shotgun powders but H4895 that I use for 4 of the 6 rifles I load for I haven’t seen in stock since December. Primers I stumble across about once a month and those are a 2 tray(200ct) limit can’t get bricks anymore.

Same here. Scored a milled receiver mak 90 and loaded up on 7.62×39. Still good deals on ammo.

 

5.56 and 9mm is available online and prices are dropping slowly. 

One of the many down sides to living in NY we can’t buy ammo online and have it shipped to us. Well you can ship to a ffl then pay their fees to do it for you so tack that onto the price. 

This weekend I swung by Rural King for coffee, cat litter and bottled water. Ended up also grabbing a 100 round box of Winchester Active Duty 9mm for under $30 after tax, which seems to be a bargain as of late. I can afford to spend some time at the range now.

I saw 9mm in 50 round boxes for $19.99 last week.  First time I've seen them in a while.  There was a 5 box limit.  I thought about buying a couple but I'm pretty set on that one so I passed.

As a longtime competitive shooter and hunter who sometimes used tens of thousands of rounds a year, I've weathered this scenario numerous times. The only solution: buy when cheap (or available at all) and stack 'em deep. ?

 

Count on shortages of reloading components until long after the manufacturers of loaded ammo catch up.

 

I think I started reloading back when 50 rounds of 9mm cost $5.99, and I used to buy case quantities of Blazer aluminum for $2.99 at Academy. Yep, those were the days.

The local store I used to work at been getting varget about every other week when powder comes. I thought about trying to use it for my 308 but going another route

Varget is ideal for the .308: it's all I use whether for precision, long range or hunting.

I forgot what I grabbed a few pounds of when I was working at the store to try in the 308. I’ve got a few lbs of h4895 that I use for my 20practical and 243 then h4198 for the 17hornet I forgot what I grabbed to use in the 308 I haven’t even started loading for it yet been mostly doing 45acp lately shoot 50 a week usually in 45 and 9 but I’ve got several thousand 9. I’ve got the dies to do 9 but no small pistol primers and not in a big rush to start that one I did the math I can shoot 50 a week like I do and make it 3 years before running out. I still buy it when ever I see it also. 45 isn’t as common around here and I’m gonna be picking up another 45 soon for a different duty pistol. 

I check the eight big internet sites every week, haven't seen Varget in at least a year. I'll keep waiting till Graf's or powder valley or one of em' get the 8lber's in and I'll be set for quite a while. Most accurate cleanest burning powder in my 308 is RL15....tried quite a few when I built my sons tactical rifle.
