reel suggestion

Featured Replies

I would like to get a new baitcast reel for fishing lipless and squarebill cranks. The one I use now is good, but is made for deep crankin (4.7 to 1 ratio). You have to wind really fast to use it and we do not have any deep lakes so a better gear ratio is needed. Any suggestions for a medium priced reel and gear ratio for this application? Thanks.

Daiwa Tatula CT, 6.3 or 7.3:1 should work.

Or the Fuego CT

I use my Fuego CT 6.3 for all my cranks when using casting gear.

Lew's LFS and on up the price range are solid reels. I'm happy with all of mine. I picked up Shimano SLX's in the XT and MGL varieties this year and so far they are VERY smooth, especially the MGL. That thing's slicker than frog snot. As WRB stated, a 6 or 7 speed should serve you well.

You're going to get the whole catalog of reels recommended without giving a price range.

It's low-geared reels that are hard to find - just about everything is offered in 6-8 gearing.

Shimano Curado K 6.X:1.  Great reel, smooth and casts a mile.

This or a curado MGL. I would also recommend a lews reel with the ACB brake system if your budget allows. I prefer a 7 gear ratio for lipless but the 6 gear ratio is a great all around speed.

I'm partial to Lew's reels. I have 4 and some of them are really getting long in the tooth with no issues.

Oh, I should have mentioned I'm partial to the 7.5:1 ratio for most things and a 8:1 for jigs because you do a lot of pitching and winding right back. My philosophy is that you can always reel a fast reel slower, but you can't always reel a slow reel fast enough. And why make more cranks in a day that necessary?
