Some bass I've been catching at a local lake have these nasty looking sores with those white thorn looking things sticking out of the middle of them. Some of the fish are really ate up with them. Haven't been able to find anything on the web. Can anyone identify the cause?

Almost looks like Anchor Worm - it's a parasite.

Which lake those come out of?

Been bass fishing for many years and not seen sores quite like that.

I would send the pic to your local DNR.  Their website should have contact info for a biologist, and may even have a dedicated portal for reporting.  

Seems to either have a pretty obvious parasite sticking out of the middle of the infected area, or possibly, the fish was gouged by something sharp and it's working it's way back out of it's body.

Ditto. If it is parasites, they can treat it.

Doesn't look good for sure!  I don't fish there but still don't like to see stuff like that around our area for sure!

10-4. Atwood is the only lake I've seen it. I also fish Leesville, Clendening, and Piedmont alot.

Update?   

Called and left a message the day before Thanksgiving. Never heard back.

 I called N Y state F & G  about terrible loss of marine plants & animals in our area. Left word. The director of the division calls me Monday & we chat about the losses. Top guy was interested in anything affecting tourism  & income to our area.
