Spinning Rod For Jerk Baits

Featured Replies

What size spinning rod to throw jerk baits?

The length can be whatever you want.  Longer usually gives longer casts, but if you fish tip down, length has to be considered relative to your height.  You don't want the tip in the water when jerking.

The action should most likely be fast, according to most fishermen's preference.  The power should be such that it's lure weight recommendation is centered over the most likely weights you'll be casting.  This is to get the rod to load properly for easy/effective casts.

Favorite for me is 6'-10" - 7'-1" in Medium / Fast. I like to fish jerkbaits with rod movement to the side and not snapping the rod up and down. Longer rods get these baits out there farther and can set that hook!

I use a 7' M/MF Falcon Bucoo SR for my smaller jerbaits.

6' to 6-6".   I'm also a 'side sweeper', and with anything longer I start hitting things.

I haven't fished it with a jerkbait yet, but I just went through the same process recently.  I picked up a Megabass Orochi ronin which is 6'8" and designed specifically for jerk baits.  Seems about like the ideal length for someone my height.  5'9".

ronin is a great rod for fishing smaller jerkbaits. I owned the rod from the original series and the new and the new series is more powerful for 110 baits. The original was on the lighter side.
