This one hit home after paddling my canoe in the wind yesterday. All 3 were wearing life jackets but the water is still cold

3 men in a canoe, in 20 mph winds, with whitecaps, dangerous any time of year away from the shoreline.

That’s sad..

Definitely sad ☹️.

Just last Wednesday a buddy of mine and I were fishing out of his Bass boat, water temp was 41*, air temp mid 60's.

I yelled up to the bow for him to put his PFD on and he wasn't to excited about the idea.

I told him then to do it for me so I'm not battling his big behind while he's dealing with hypothermia......he put it on.

remember, when the temps of the water and air combined are are less than 120°, hypothermia is the top lottery winner. know the risks before you go out.

Sad!!  What were they thinking?

Surprised that they were local people caught like that in a canoe.

Canoes are designed to roll a lot. If they tried or wind got them sideways ?  My little 16' Aluminum V hull is very sensitive to the wind. I just do not go out.  Docking is unreal in wind with almost empty fuel tanks.  I just have beached it.  If I get caught in a sudden squall.

I canoe in somewhat cold water sometimes, I’m not sure it’s the smartest thing . I tend to stay close to shore . I used to guide kayaking trips in cold water and I was always on pins and needles, but it seemed to work out better for the clients if I at least pretended to be relaxed. As soon as people get nervous, things usually go worse. I have seen random wind gusts send people into sheer panic, kayak slammed into the bank, screaming, the whole 9 yards

I only would go canoeing 3 people I could trust.  Me myself & I.

All for 1.  1 for all.         I canoed in a river where the deepest place was 4' deep.  Houses on both banks.
