Good points made there Boomstick. Abu's tend to run heavy in my experience. I have a ML Veritas, 6'9" I believe, and it's as stout as some other mediums I have. I really like my two 7' SLX ML's and my Ark Tharp 6'10" Meterman Special which are both true ML's IMO and great rods for neds and dropshotting.

I would say its definitely enough rod. Look at the weight rating, match your line accordingly and you will be fine with neds, hair, wacky

Ive caught 5 pound smallies with 1/2 oz finesse football jigs with ML XF spinning rods, and accidently caught a couple very large catfish on the same without issues.  The only real difference will be the length of the fight.

While that is laudable I don't think 1/2 oz anything qualifies as finesse.

I buy football heads in bulk from a local guy, paint them, and then tie a 13 or 26 strand skirt on them.  He uses Mustad 32746's so they are pretty light.  I only use it where you would throw a tube, which is open water, with rock.

That Veritas ML rod is closer to a medium action with other rod makers ... Use #10 lb. Power Pro braid main line to a # 8 lb. FC leader and you would do just fine . Set the reel to the appropriate drag setting and go fish it !

I find Abu to be stiffer than others. That ML will do just fine. I'd really tune the drag for ned rigs.

It seems, after all the responses here, that your finance is trying to open you eyes to new possibilities.  Take her fishing and see what else she can teach you.

All mine except one are ML . You don't horse a fish to the boat with a ML you guide him to the boat is  the best way I can describe it.

I have more ML spinning rigs than M. My favorite wacky rig setup is a 6'10" Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth rod with a Daiwa Fuego LT that I put Carbontex drag washers in.

 

I've caught quite a few 5 - 6lb smallies on that rod and never had an issue. You just don't horse them into the boat. I like it because it is light and has a great tip so I can skip that wacky under anything.

 

To me a ML will do a lot as long as you have a reel with a good smooth drag.
