I currently have my transom mounted trolling motor hooked up. The issue I have is there is no OFF switch to the trolling motor. The only way to turn it off is to turn the handle. My issue with this is if I am working on the trolling motor (example: getting weeds off propeller) there is nothing stopping this from turning back on if the handle accidentally gets hit and turns to on position.

 

Does anyone know of a way to have a master turn off switch to this? Or is it safe to disconnect the black wire from the battery whenever I need to pull up the motor?

It is safe to disconnect the black wire but that would drive me crazy.  There are countless marine switches on the market.  Just make sure you get one that can handle the high current that a trolling motor requires.  100 amps should be enough. Here's just one made by a reliable company with a 350 amp rating.

Big foot switch is nice for a hand operated trolling motor, especially on the bow

You can certainly disconnect one of the terminals, a better option would be a switch at the terminal or inline.
