I'm trying to match the hatch, with the predominant baitfish in my rivers and creeks being creek chubs and other minnows with thick stripes down their sides. Does anyone have lures that come in a pattern with this stripe? I want to know before I go scribbling lateral lines on all my Keitechs.

Any slender lure like a the Original Rapala floating Minnow with a black strip added using a Sharpie pin or in baby bass color.

I'd give that marker a try, but I've spray painted crankbaits with just rattle cans so be warned.

Contact the guys from Fitt premium lures. Fitt Premium Lures (fittlures.com)

They got the business from a guy that use to make a bait called a river dace. It is a dead ringer for the minnows you describe. They don't make them to sell anymore as they were a time consuming process. I know they know how to make them and have the mold. It is the slow season right now so you may be able to persuade them into making you a couple bags.

Try a Rage Tail Menace, Smokey Shad. You don't need to modify the color.

Emailed them about it, hopefully they get back to me on Monday. If i can't get my hands on any I'll probably go the Sharpie route.

I primarily fish for largemouth but I remember this one time a friend and me were fishing a creek and we asked this rude shady guy with long hair who was fishing it also what would be a good lure imitation for creek chubs and he got kinda hostile and passive agressive about it, he basically told us that it doesn't matter what color it is or we need to just put a black line on it, we ended up doing that and we caught no fish, next outing we got a hardbait with a similar color pattern to creek chubs and killed it. Friend caught a 2.3lb smallmouth in a deep pool.

Also check out the stone catties on the Fitt site. They work in the river, I'm sure they will work in your creeks. Rigged like a ned

Rapalas in just Shad Raps has 6-10 minnow type patterns. Silver, Shad, Live River Shad, Smelt, Helsinki Shad, Herring…..others that resemble minnows.

Size and profile probably mean more than that stripe or lack there of a stripe.

I fish a Shad Rap successfully all season. I vary my color patterns but have not added any stripes to them. Rapala puts out a pattern called Holograph Shiner, don’t overlook that pattern. But I wouldn’t overlook a silver with a black back or a silver with a blue back either.
