Pitching with braid

Featured Replies

How would you break off pitching with braid? I wouldn't want to cut that line and leave it if snagged so looking for options for a lure snagged you can't get with a lure retriever

Use a small wooden dowel. Wrap the line around it and pull.

Use a wooden dowel or your boat cleat.

I use my pliers. Wrap the braid around it until it doesn’t slip and start pulling. The hook usually straightens before braid breaks.

I've done the wooden dowel and pulled the boat closer to the snag lol

I should add its a thick pitching jig hook

One of the reasons I don't like braid. Even using a dowel you don't know for sure how much line you're leaving in the water.

Only time I pitch straight braid is in grass/punching.  Other then that I use a leader of 17 to 20lb fc about 6ft long or as needed especially around trees and brush.  Tends to slide over branches opposed to cutting into them.  And it's easier to break too.

I wrap the line around my pliers also. 90 percent of the time I get everything back.

I've got a little chunk of scrap steel that I use.  But really anything that's strong enough would work, so long as it doesn't have sharp edges and has some way of providing some resistance for the braid so it doesn't just spin around the thing.  The good thing about heavy braid is sometimes you'll get your lure back instead of breaking off.

Since I fish from a kayak, with thick braid, I usually wind up pulling myself directly over the snag first.  And that's fine with me, as I'll often use a plug knocker to try to get it out anyway.

When punching through the thickest stuff I use #80 original Power Pro.
Using dowel or lead pipe, my hand will give out first.
The best thing I do is to maneuver right on top where the line goes in, point the rod vertical and cut it as far down the blank I can.

Of Course I move after all that because that spot would be dead for a bit and then come back.
