My trolling motor, while on spot lock, rotated enough to break the wiring from my trolling motor mounted transducer. My question, is it possible to splice the wiring back together? Can a transducer wire be spliced properly without any negative results to my electronics?

I've been told yes by a few people over the years, but have yet to see it be successfully done. 

The cable is coaxial with the outer braid being a conductor. To work properly the repair can’t alter the impedance.

Better to replace the TD and cable….or have a authorized service repair.

Yeah.  It'll take some soldering skills and minor electronics knowledge to do right, so I'd probably take it in to a pro if you're not pretty good with that stuff.  But it's certainly possible in the right hands.  

I sure wouldn’t try. 

I’m a 2M certified solder tech. and I could do it sitting at a solder station with the right equipment. That said, if it was mine I’d buy a new cable/transducer. As a rule, splicing coax. just isn’t a good idea.

It can be done with proper skills and tools.  I've done it on old transducers, but not these new ones with 9 - 14 conductors plus shielding.  Whether or not you should kind of depends on you wallet.  You didn't specify a unit, but SI transducers cost $200 - $400.  If you don't have the money and can solder and heat shrink, may have to try.

 

I wouldn't, but I have $400 for a new one.

 

Watch the Amazon Warehouse for transducer buys.  I've picked up a couple there.

Yes it can be done with no adverse effects.  I've been using a Humminbird 998 for several years with a spliced cable and it reads the same as my Lowrance on the same boat.  I used to be an electronic tech, now all I do is fish.
