Shocking experience tonight…

Featured Replies

So there I was charging my boat for tomorrow’s fishing. Since I’ve been having trouble with my trolling motor I thought I would go and check and see if it was working, I got shock, then as I was going to check it again I leaned against my boat I got a real nice shock. anybody experienced this before? Any ideas or advice? Thanks for your input as always.

p.s. It’s a 2017 tracker pro team 175 txw

My guess is your charger is trying to kill you.  If it can’t get you by electrocuting you it may try to burn your house down.

Seriously,  I would kill the power to the charger until you figure out what’s going on.  You left out a lot of details like what you were doing when you got shocked so it’s hard to say what’s going on.  What did you touch that shocked you?

Not something you want to mess around with. Disconnect all electrical power. If your skill level in electrical is good start looking for your short. If not get a qualified electrician to find your issue. Since you stated you were having issues with your trolling motor I would start there.

I bet the charger is common negative to the boat.  Instead of running wire from all points back to the battery it’s cheaper to connect all negative terminals to the metal boat and then the boat to the battery. However if you’re touching the boat while you turn power on to something, it might be easier for the charge to exit through you then going back to the battery.

"Shock me once, shame on you"....  Yeah, disconnect the AC current until you can figure out what's going on. Multimeter is your friend.

It sounds like some wire has probably rubbed on the hull enough to wear through the coating. Since your TM has been acting up, I'd start there and work my way back.
