Dobyns Champion XP 807 Mag Swimbait Rod Review For Hinkle Trout

Featured Replies

So the story starts when I wanted to use my dobyns Mag Swimbait 807 rod for my larger swimbaits such dips 250 or mothers or hinkle trout because I dont want to have multiple swimbait rod in my truck all the time.  It was rated for 3oz to 10oz which it was ok for what I had in mind and I could leave my big rods at home, BUT when I try to cast the hinkle I saw that it bends the rod more than normal just holding it, And it was horrible for casting and the hinkle is 9,6oz so still below the rated recommendation, Anyways I want to tell you guys the rod is awesome and so light but it is only good for lures about 6 to 7oz such dips 250, And it cant handle big 9 or 10 oz at all.

Most if not all rods are a wee bit over rated for weight. If a rod is rated say 6 to 10 oz, then usually about 8.5 oz would be the max weight for good casting. This holds true for evey rod I've owned, and yes even my old 807 XP..

3 to 10= 13 /2= 6.5 the ideal nominal weight for a swimbait rod rating.

7 oz would in the rods wheelhouse

9 1/2 oz lure you need a XX heavy rod.

true, Anyways I have another rod I can use for 10oz lure, Just I wish my 807 could handle it, because I love it, very light and my reel sitting on it very well and I can cast with it all day. Now I am aiming to change it with 867 xp after selling this one.

The 867 will work?

You'll be able to retire on that one day ?

Poor redneck just waiting for those SPRO Chad Shads and the new Shimano 280s

I'll continue to admire Hinkle baits from the nosebleeds lol.

Swimbaits are a rabbit hole I’ve avoided. I’ve been tempted a few times and each time my research convinced me that I’d be better off with a heavier rod than I thought I’d need. If I ever stray into the swimbait black hole, I’ll opt for a rod with the minimum rating close to the weight I intend to throw most often.

I'm just dipping my toes in with small swimbaits I can toss on a MH like Bucca Baby Gill and Shad and a cheap knockoff.
