Super User bulldog1935 Posted May 18, 2023 Super User Share Posted May 18, 2023 A friend on another forum, true gentleman, was asking about the short one-hand grips on my river kayak rods. I think he wants to find equivalent grip length, straight reel seat without needing the round-reel offset. I mentioned my 13Fishing Omen Green has the shortest (split) grip on any of my contemporary rods. So asking the question, who makes your favorite one-hand grip bass rod? I'll just link him to this thread so he can see your answers - remember, you're in public now. ?

The Valkyrie would be a good choice with the adjustable butt section but they are slightly heavy and it might be awkward to cast one hand if don't have good hand strength. There is also the P5 Criffhanger. The handle is short, it's light and you can easily cast it with one hand.
SproDD79
I know he is interested in a casting rod, but if he were looking for a spinning rod, my Dobyns Fury 662 has a really short split grip handle, is well balanced and has a comfortable grip.

Yeah, he's a BOD officer (VP) in ORCA, where spinning reels are gadgets.

I thought of another one. St. Croix Mojo Yak. The handles on these rods are shorter and the tip is pretty soft. I have enjoyed mine.
Super User WRB Posted May 18, 2023 Super User Share Posted May 18, 2023 Have a custom rod built. Recommend DVL or ALX. Tom 1

Saint Croix Premier offers short straight handle casting rods with 3 different length cork Handles. I am sure you all know that. jbrew73
Why not find a rod that he likes and cut the rear grip down to the length he likes? I can’t imagine that it would cost much to have it professionally done.
QED
I LOVE the old Shimano colfor (cold forged) aluminum pistol grip graphite casting rods. I had to pay ~$1k per rod recently for like new or NOS specimens so well worth it to me. A couple of other specimens were from my ditch school to go fishing days. Insanely useful BFS rods and possess comfort and beauty too, so they are highly recommended by me. 1
Super User Jrob78 Posted May 19, 2023 Super User Share Posted May 19, 2023 I feel like one handed casting has mostly become a thing of the past, largely because rods are getting longer and longer. It's hard to accurately cast a 7' or longer rod, handle length does also play a part in that though I'm sure. So my advice to your friend would be to pay attention to handle length but also overall rod length.

I scored mine for around 175 with a bantam 100 on it. Both are in excellent condition. The bantam on this rod was a NOS reel my grandfather gave me few years ago. He had it stored away many years. I put an Avail lightweight spool in it, carbon drag washers, and better ss spool bearings. This is a fun to use combo! 2

The ones in great condition I've seen cost much more now than when they were new. But I still look for them?
