Smallest baitcaster that can handle 17-20lb fluorocarbon

Featured Replies

I personally love the 70 sized reels but they just typically don’t have the spool capacity to handle 17-20lb line. What other reels are out there that are small in hand but have a deep enough spool? I have several zillions but I’d prefer to keep additional reels around $200 or less. 100 sized reels seem about right on but wondering what your thoughts are. I’m considering the curado mgl 150 but I typically haven’t enjoyed the size of the 150 or larger reels such as the metanium b, cronarch mgl, or curado 200k. Is the curado 150 mgl smaller than the metanium and how would it compare to the zillion g in size ?

any help is appreciated

I've got a 150mgl on my chatterbait rod.  I'm using 15lb but I don't see any reason 17 or 20 wouldn't work.  Oh yeah, it throws a chatterbait a mile!

Tatula 70 sv or alphas sv tw.  I can't stand heavy flouro and the fast and free nature of centrifugal.  Even regular magforce z can struggle with the stuff.  Sv all the way.  The tws also helps pass that slinky out of the reel and send it on its way.

Neither of those reels are good matches for 17-20lb flouro

Lews LFS have deeper spools than Shimano 150s and are about the same size. I was transferring 30lb pp from a Tournament MB and filled up an SLX XT completely way before the Lews spool was empty.

I have 16lb Sunline BMS Sniper on a Daiwa Zillion and on a Shimano Metanium. Both have worked great with this line. If you are going with a different brand of FC in 17lb, it would probably do just fine. Out of the two, the Metanium I use as my main jig reel handles it the best but the Zillion, to me, is more versatile.

I also have 20lb Sunline Defier Armilo on a Zillion HD, which is a little stiffer than some mono lines, and it handles it well.

I have a Team Lite &  Tournament Lite, not overly small but 5.3 ozs makes up for it.
