Jig rod

Featured Replies

I want to try out some smaller jigs and maybe also t rig some smaller creature baits for bottom fishing. Specifically I ordered some Tight Rope Firework finesse jigs, 3/16 and 1/4 ounce but not exactly light wire, they have a fairly stout hook. Hoping they'll work on the miles of rip rap I fish. Not sure I'll stick with it (I have just about zero experience jigging) so I'm looking for something on the budget end without compromising sensitivity too much. Tight Rope guys said a 7' MH will do. $100 - $200. Thanks for any advice.

Check out the 7’1” MH-F St. Croix Victory. That’ll make a good jig stick for you. If you want something more budget friendly,  check out the Mojo. I don’t believe the Victory is as better than Mojo as the price difference suggests.

Those tightrope jigs are slaying for me on lake michigan and I have a major craft days 6'9M/F w/ 10lb sniper.  I've had great hookups and don't recall losing any.  You can certainly use a MH too, nice stout hook.  The MC days rod is around $135 from digitaka, MC benkei is $145 at tw.  Jackall 3.8" i-shad as a trailer is sneaky good in goby water.

I bought a 7’2” MH Expride last night for $125. Tons and tons of choices in your price range.

Kistler helium’s are 210 right now. I got one yesterday for 230 with shipping. The KLX rods are even less.

Phenix feathers are also high quality rods at a great price point.  They run a little light; a listed MH fishes closer to a M.

I use a 7’2” MF casting Okuma Psycho Stick specifically for 1/4oz jigs around rip rap at texoma for smallies and it’s an amazing rod for that. A little over your budget though unless you find it used or on sale

Softwateronly:  I've already got a 6'10 medium Expride for my jerkbait rod, think that would work for the firework jig?

Pbbrandon, is that a medium fast? Maybe I think I need more rod than I really do.

It is a medium fast yes. A MH might be fine for 1/4oz but 3/16 is pushing it. Dropping down to a medium is probably your best bet with those small jigs. Especially since you say you are fishing rip rap, which I assume won’t have too much vegetation around it

Ark Invoker $149 or Tharp $129 series, 7' MH XF. Light, very sensitive, very well balanced. Outstanding for light jigs and trigs.

I use a M for those 1/4 and under compact jigs and it works well.  The picasso tungsten footballs use a 2x gamy and my M F has enough power to set it well.

The 6'10M expride is a great rod for the fireworks jig.  You should definitely try it before you get another, so you can find a different bait to buy a new combo for :)
