Deuceu72 Posted November 1, 2006 Posted November 1, 2006 Well, I have never used braid as I dont care for it at all..........but the guys I fish with who use it seem to like the power pro the best........... ;D Sorry i couldnt come up with a better reply! Quote
Super User senile1 Posted November 1, 2006 Super User Posted November 1, 2006 Hey, Muddy. You're going to get a lot of different answers on the brand, but I would use 30 lb test or higher on a baitcaster. The diameter is still small compared to mono and the thicker braids won't dig into the spool as much. In fact, 50 or 60 lb Sufix Performance Braid will hardly dig in at all. I believe Sufix is the best, but you can't go wrong with PowerPro either. Quote
Guest the_muddy_man Posted November 1, 2006 Posted November 1, 2006 thanks for taking the time nd effort to reply in the first place Quote
Super User RoLo Posted November 1, 2006 Super User Posted November 1, 2006 On an outfit similar to the one you describe, I'm using 30-lb PowerPro Spectra and I really love it. There's no line-burrowing to speak of, and 30-lb PowerPro is only 0.011" in diameter, equivalent to 10-lb Trilene XL. Awesome stuff! Sufix line is another class-act. Though I cannot speak from experience, I've heard nothing but good reports about Sufix Braid. Roger Quote
RiskKid. Posted November 1, 2006 Posted November 1, 2006 I've been using 50# power pro and like it. It's now time for me to respool so based on what I've seen here I just bought and am going to try the 50# suffix. I suspect I will be pleased with it too. Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted November 1, 2006 Super User Posted November 1, 2006 MUDDY DUDE,GET 50 LB SUFIX!!!! Quote
Chug Bug Posted November 1, 2006 Posted November 1, 2006 I again agree with dodgeguy. I have 40# Sufix on everything. Love everything about it. Also, you will find that baitcasting with braid is MUCH easier than with mono. Quote
Guest the_muddy_man Posted November 1, 2006 Posted November 1, 2006 50# suffix it is thanks to all Im gonna need it to pull the fish of the week outta FORK in March 8-) Quote
Super User MickD Posted November 1, 2006 Super User Posted November 1, 2006 The best braid I've found for baitcasters is 24 pound Fusion. I'm sure there are many that are as good, but I haven't found them. I use a clear mono/fleuro leader of about 6-8 feet connected with a uni knot. Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted November 2, 2006 Super User Posted November 2, 2006 muddy dude, great choice!!! Quote
SneakySnook Posted November 4, 2006 Posted November 4, 2006 Just pick up power pro you can't go wrong with it. Quote
Fish Chris Posted November 4, 2006 Posted November 4, 2006 I'd use at least 30 lb TUF-Line XP, with a 20 lb Seaguar Fluorocarbon leader...... Or maybe 50 lb with a 25 or 30 lb Fluorocarbon leader. BTW, Power Pro, TUF-Line, and (I believe) Suffix, are all made from the exact same spectra fiber. TUF-Line is just nicely braided, and is the best value. Never used Suffix, so I can't say anything bad about it..... But I do know it is more expensive. And hey Dane, Fusion is not "braid". It is only fused because this makes it cheaper to produce (coming directly from factory insiders) just like Firedline. I know a lot of guys like that stuff, but it just totally reminds me of dental floss. I went to braid to get away from stiff, kinky, coily. With fused lines, just about the time they start to get broke in well, and lose the stiff, kinky, coilyness, its time to replace it, because its coming 'unfused'. But hey, if it works for you. I have to admit, it's probably 5% better than mono, for whatever that's worth. Peace, Fish Quote
Super User MickD Posted November 4, 2006 Super User Posted November 4, 2006 Fusion may not be braid, but it acts like braid with respect to its stretch, or lack of stretch. It is about twice the diameter of usual braids, about half that of monos. Because it is not as thin as most "braids" is doesn't have the tendency to dig in as much. It has just seemed to handle better on my bait caster than any other I have found. And it seems smoother though the guides. I tried Iron Silk, which is probably another "fused" line, and didn't like it. Too stiff. I couldn't find Fusion on line at any retailer, so it may be "was" instead of "is." I may have to go to a higher pound test of a line like Power Pro to get the diameter I like. I have used 65 pound Power Pro on an in-shore BC reel and liked it. I have noticed that Fusion does deteriorate in time and I will cut off the end a few feet now and then, but I have not felt that it deteriorates any faster than some other "braids" I have tried. Power Pro seems very durable on my spinning rods in heavier pound tests. The 10 pound test, as is logical since it is so thin, is more fragile and needs replacement more often. Since I use a clear leader with all braids/fused lines it is necessary to put on a new knot fairly often with any line/leader combination. The knot going through the guides so often gets beat up.
