2023 Moose Hunt Camp

Featured Replies

Just got back today from four days of fun at our hunt camp. Went in Saturday afternoon to spend a couple days doing a bunch of jobs around camp, with the actual hunt beginning Monday morning.
We were done and had the guns unloaded and packed back up by 9:30 Monday morning!

One of the guys got a dandy, the older members said it was the largest bull they’ve shot out there, and they’ve shot tons of moose out there over the many years of hunting.
We took the four quarters of meat to the butcher yesterday and they weighed 631 lbs. which would put it at around 1200 lbs live weight.
He had a broken paddle on one side, that looked like it was broken while still in velvet so unlikely that it was from fighting with another bull.
On the walk back to camp after our “long hunt”, a couple of the guys saw another slightly smaller bull standing broadside at 30 yds, but we only had one tag, so we’ll leave him till next year 😄. In the last two seasons, our camp has hunted a grand total of 32 min to get two nice bulls, needless to say there’s quite a few moose in the area. We spent the next couple days just working around the camp, doing repairs to the buildings, rebuilding some atv bridges over creeks, and just hanging around telling stories and enjoying a few beverages with good friends.
It was a wonderful time, and we get to do it all over again in about two weeks when our deer rifle season starts, and now we have a bunch of chores done at camp so we can do more hunting ( there’s way more deer and deer tags available so we won’t be quite done in 15 min 😏).

So is it one tag “per group” or how does that work? I assume you apply as a party and one person draws the permit?

It’s based on a points system. You get a point for every year you apply and don’t draw a tag, the more points you get the better your odds. The province is divided up into wildlife management units, basically different sections of land ( thousands of acres each), and they give out so many tags per unit based on their research to determine how many animals can be taken each year from each unit. In our wmu, you need about 18 points min to get an adult moose tag. That can seem like a long time to wait, but if you’re in a large group ( we have about 18 guys total), then it’s easier. We currently have about 6 guys with at least 18 points, and many more just under that, so we’re pretty much guaranteed a tag every year. You apply individually, and when we see what tags we got, we have a window of time to actually choose what ones we want for the year, and “return” the ones we don’t want, so we don’t burn points. It seems complicated, but actually works quite well.

Lottery-drawn licenses are the same here.  You accrue points when you don't draw and the more points you have, the more likely you are to get drawn.  I believe this applies to hunt bear, elk, and prairie chicken here.  Minnesota used to have a moose hunt but they eliminated that due to low numbers.

Oh boy, does it ever! There’s been as many as 5 moose hanging off it at one time, and more deer than you could imagine.

I’ve had moose once and it was very good! So far my big game rank as far as taste goes would be,

1: Caribou

2: Moose

3: Elk

4: Deer

Sounds like an awesome weekend with friends. Love it. Congrats on the moose, too!
