I have an opportunity to buy either a Lew’s KVD 7:5:1 or BassPro Johnny Morris Platinum 6:8:1 baitcaster, both great prices. I can only buy one, which is better?

Thanks

Pretty much the same reel.  The BPS one gets an aluminum handle side plate which is a bonus to me.  The non handle side plate is also aluminum but that it done for the fancy plate finish and does not provide structural support.  The part of the side plate that cam locks into the frame and supports the spool shaft would have to be aluminum to add support.  This is what Daiwa does with the armed housing and used to do as standard back in the day.  Anyways get whatever you want.  The Lews is certainly cheaper.

I disagree that they’re the same reel. The Johnny Morris is a better reel - just compare specs.

A significant price difference IMO. If you’re looking in the $200 range the world is your oyster.

They appear to be the same doyo platform fitted with the same braking system effectively making them the "same reel" in my eyes.  The differences between the two being more of trim option between two vehicles of the same model.

The aluminum handle plate is a nice bonus. Eliminates any flex in the reel if you are crankin into a big bass.

I used to have a KVD and wasn’t a huge fan of it. Maybe it was a bad apple, I typically like most Lews reels. I handled the Platinum Signature in store a few times and it definitely feels more refined and higher quality

Put them on a rod and see how they feel to you. This is the best advice I have ever been given to see your preference. Since they are close to the same reel, this would be the deciding factor for me.

No I don’t.  Historically he switched companies regularly.  That is why I asked.  They may have come from the same plant.

Even if not the same plant there’s not enough difference to base a decision on. Pick the one that feels, looks best, appeals to you and is best deal. The JM seems a little higher end

I'd get a Lew's tournament pro lfs . Better than Either IMHO due to the 27 point externally adjustable brake.

I’ve owned both. The KVD is a Tournament MP with different paint and knobs. The JM Platinum is as well, save for the all aluminum build and bearings stuffed into every nook and cranny.

The JM Platinum is the nicer feeling of the two, only because of the finish on the entire aluminum exterior.

I had zero complaints with either. I’d go on the price. I would gladly pay $50-$70 more for the JM though.
