I am going to spool up with some new line. I am going to use it in the river over the winter, so it needs to hold up to 10 lb. walleyes and steelhead. I am currently using cajun red cast line, 6lb. test. I have broke off one fish, and the ones i hook into take a very long time to land, about 3-5 minutes per fish. Depending on speciese and size. Anyways, i was thinking about using braided line, so i can get better feel, hooksets, and hopefully increase chances of landing fish. Btw, what is the difference between fireline and other superlines? The next choice is yo-zuri hybrid. I have no idea what the big deal is about this line, never tried it, fill me in. And the final choice is using florocarbon, and i would like you to assist me in choosing a brand if that is the best choice. I have been using vanish in 8lb. test and have problems with the line fraying, and the knots holding. What should i use?

I would go with either power pro or suffix if you choose braid. I think you will find that most folks here prefer one of those two when it comes to braid. I have used power pro on one of my baitcasters and have been pleased but am going to give suffix a try also. I am also using yo zuri hybrid ultra soft (6# on spinning gear ans 12# on baitcasters). It is rated for a higher lb test (I beleive the 6 is actually about 11# and the 12 about 19#) and is rather abraison resistant. I have been really happy with it.

I have used power pro, and it is my favorite braid to date. It blows spiderwire out of the water. I am curious what the difference is between fireline and power pro, as far as advantages and disadvantages go. I understand that it is a much different material.

Hehe...I don't think I've ever heard RW quote his 12lb and 6lb Ultra soft lines without listing the breaking strength as well.  I will suggest a good 12lb Copolymer such as Pline CXX or the new Evolution.  Hybrid is also a choice, but I like the regular versus the ultra soft due to the better clarity and less stretch.

Yep, RW is the reason I'm using the the ultra soft. Glad he touts it here as I really like it. An example of good info shared here.....wouldn't surprise me if he has a bit more info about it  

For light line 4-8lb all I use is P-Line pure floro! It is stiffer than mono and it takes some getting use too but I really like it. Powerpro is the most recommended braid but I have no experience with it? Now I have used stren braid and it works but since I am still using the same spool after 3 years I see no need to try power pro.

I would suggest trying the new red PowerPro as your main line and either

Cajun or Shakespeare Supreme line as your leader. I use all three brands

all of the time and I have had great results from each of them.

The main thing I didn't like about fireline was that it frays a lot more than PowerPro and doesn't last as long.  It also digs in to the spool more (i think this is due to the shape of the line).

Take a $7.99 gamble.

If you are spooling up a spinning reel, try #6 Yo-Zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft. For baitcasting #12. I have never been broken off by a fish using these lines.

If you don't like it, try something else. It's not a major investment.

Please, don't let your children use braid. Braid is bad, repeat, braid is bad. It is good for putting up wind chimes on your deck though, I will admit that,lol.

Stick  to power pro ,I ve tried the new red color in a tournament with good results.

I went to my local BPS to buy Suffix braid because of all the positive things said about it on this site.  When I couldn't find it, I asked a sales rep, and he told me that Suffix was such a slow seller that this store took it off their shelves.  He said that PowerPro was THE best selling braid that the store had.  So, I'm using green 30 lb. PowePro with a Fluro leader.  I'm not experienced enough to know whether or not a leader is really needed, but I figured, why take the chance?
