Im in the market for a new rod and am leaning towards a g loomis glx 7'M/H. Now i currently have a st croix avid same size M/H but i hear the st croix are lighter than their rating.  Is this true because if they are very similar in power i will go with a beefier loomis rod.

What are you going to fish with it? I have a MH St. Croix & a MH G-Loomis IMX. They are about the same, in terms of power and action. If you want a heavier rod, go heavy on the GLX especially if you want to muscle heavy fish out of thick cover. You should also consider an IMX if you going with a heavier rod. You can save some bucks and I think you lose some of the advantages of the GLX in heavier power rods. JMHO

Although I think that is generally true, you will be able to judge for yourself when you do a little testing of your own. Take the spooled reel that you plan to match up with the rod and a couple of lures or jigs along with you (1/2, 3/4 & 1 oz). I think you can tell just by the feel of a rigged up rod which one you like better. The last digit in the Loomis numbering system is suppose to describe the Power rating, but this varies. For example, 4 can be both Medium or Heavy depending on the model.

If I had a choice between these two, I'd go with a Helium!

I fish both company's rods and like them, but going forward, I am probably choosing G.Loomis over St. Croix.

I'm more of a St Croix guy but G-Loomis makes great rods also.  If your looking at the GLX don't compare it to the avid.  The avid is a good rod and not to take anything away from it don't compare it to the GLX.  The GLX is G-Loomis top of the line rod so to give you a true comparison, compare it to the St Croix Legend Elite. Compare St Croix's best vs. G-Loomis's best and then make your decision.

IMHO, the Loomis rods seem lighter than their rating (this is depending on which model your looking at).  

I'd go with RW's idea and take the reel to the store and a get the idea of how the whole set up feels.

My personal preference, between Loomis and St.Croix ,would have to be the G. Loomis GLX MBR843C or the BCR853 (just a little more sensitive than the MBR843C).  But overall, both rod companies make excellent rods and you really can't go wrong with either one.

Well the st croix i bought last year was my really my first purchase of a rod with any sensitivity. I used to fish exclusively with a broomstick. I like the st croix and i have the money now to spend on a g-loomis. I fish mostly out of a canoe and can really only bring 3 rods out at a time.  I have noticed that the SC rod i have doesnt have the muscle to move the bigger fish too fast. I want the sensitivity of the loomis and something to move those fish out of cover with. Basically im looking for a third rod aside from my spinning rig and the SC i already have.

 

                                  What would be my best bet out of the g-loomis rods?

ohh and i have tried several out at the stores and i have a hard time telling if its what i need until ive caught a few fish with em

Have you looked at the MBR785C yet?  The 784 and 785 have always been my favorite worm and jig rods... nice tips and plenty of backbone.

If 7' is your preference, the 844 is probably what you are after.  

The catalog lists an 845 but I've never seen it in a store.  (and it only is listed in a GL3)

Hmm i may need to wait until the bass pro shop opens near me so i can try a few out with my reel and some lures as RW suggested. Ill hook up my sister's pomeranian to get a feel for the power. BPS stores will let you try out their stuff right?

I'm still not clear if you are interested in a casting rod or spinning rod. The Loomis rods that fishtank and flechero suggest above are only available as baitcasters.

Agreed.  I have couple of these.  This rod will do just about anything you need it to. From jiggin to c riggin.  One of my favorites with the exception of the bcr series.

I also owned a 784c pre-Shimano Loomis with the Weible reel seat, and I majorly regret selling it.  I love my 844's, but there was something special about that 784.  I like to swim jigs and paddle tail worms with a 6'6" rod, which the 784 excelled at.  It was a mean tube shaker as well  .  So I think you can gather from these responses that the Loomis 4 power MBR's are versatile and have a very loyal following  8-)
