Zillion TW HD vs zillion SV TW?

Featured Replies

I picked up a JDM zillion SV TW this summer, and I’ve used for everything from jerkbaits to frogging. Well the bait monkey convinced me I need another zillion so I’m trying to decide between the SV TW or the HD model. Id assume for stuff like frogging  and flipping you’d go with the HD, and for stuff like cranking and fishing chatterbaits the standard model would be the way to go, but my question is for stuff in between the two. What about for light pitching and casting jigs in the 1/2oz to 3/4oz range? What about for swimjigs? Will I reck a regular zillion fishing it in these situations?
Thanks

I've got both JDM models, the TW HD is like an Abrams tank.   The SV TW is like a Porche 911.

The HD TW feels SIGNIFICANTLY more robust than the SV TW and just about any other reel I've used besides the Shimano Calais/Antares lineup.

If you're casting it, and it's under 1oz, I'd just stick with the SV TWs.   If you're casting it and it's over 1oz like big deep cranks, A-Rigs, smaller swimbaits, or if you're flipping or punching and it's over 1oz the TW HD is likely the more appropriate reel.

The HD is worth it for the looks alone. But for performance, i assume they're the same. With that handle and knobs, the HD is gonna be better for heavy cover, but then again, that can easily be replaced on the standard Zillion.

They're the basically same reel.  The HD is a black Zillion with a power handle and Magforce Z Boost spool with a stronger braking profile to handle bigger baits and/or stiff plastic lines.  If I was running 16 pound plus fluorocarbon without conditioner and throwing 3/4 oz and up total weight I would want the HD and if I was throwing lighter 16 pound or under fluorocarbon or braid with an emphasis on distance I would opt for the Zillion.  I have both.

This is assuming you mean the JDM Zillion HD.  The USDM is still the old reel with a wide 36mm spool that is more of a high end Tatula 200.

What handle would you recommend for the standard Zillion?

Don't forget the JDM SV TW has alumium gears vs the TW HD having brass.

JDM SV TW has a plastic type drag dial, the TW HD has a metal one.

To me they're totally different reels.    I don't see much crossover between the two reels.

I fished my 4-yr '21 Zillion SVTW week before last next to SLPW Zillion, which is based on '22 HD.    I like the HD better.  It has an edge in drive smothness, clutch feels stiffer, more positive.  This one I haven't been inside yet, but the main gear is reported to be brass.

I was inside my '21 Zillion this week, for post salt-trip clean and lube, and it looks really good.  Especially happy with the pinion gear, which is stainless steel.  Alloy main gear still looks new.

Zillion HD has brass gears while the JDM zillion is aluminum.

Heading up north next summer to a lake known for big pike.  I’m going to get a second JDM Zillion TW HD.

Where are you headed if you don’t mind me asking?

Drive twenty hours to Cochrane, ON and a flight to Kesagami Lake.  Bucket list.

I mean, i would suggest an SLP, RCS or a Studio Composite carbon handle in 90mm, but that's expensive, and not everyone will spend $100+ on a handle alone. That's what i have on my at least.

Aluminum and brass isn't much of a difference with these new gear sets from Daiwa. As a matter of fact, i have heard and seen much more buzzy brass sets in the USDM zillion than the Japanese version.

If you're going to the trouble to customize, might want SLP Works Zillion, which is based on the '22 HD, and comes without handle and spool.

Handle is Studio Composite RC-SC Ex Plus.
