For my money, this is the way it should be done. No judgement on anyone else; you guys fish how you like. But a big chunk of the allure for a kayak is that it is light, portable, and fast to get on the water. I do not want to have to back a trailer in, winch the boat off, pull away to a parking spot, etc. Just take it off the car, throw the seat and tackle in, and get moving.

I've had a NuCanoe Frontier 12 for about 6 years and a couple weeks ago I ordered a NuCanoe Unlimited.  I haven't received it yet but I'm looking forward to rigging up a new kayak.

I keep all my kayaks bare bones, bring 2-3 rods and a tackle bag, drop it in and go fishing after work 

I too geared down last year. My aluminum kayak (canoe) is much lighter, just as stable and roomier than my (sold) Old Town AP120.

 Usually grab my sling tackle bag, three rods and paddle and go fishing.
