I’m looking for a good frog rod in the 7’ range. I was thinking about a Shimano expride but not sure if the 7’ heavy fast would be good for froggin

If I’m not mistaken. The 7’3 xh is there flagship frog rod. I’ve heard great things about it. 

Only an inch outside of your specs, but the Phenix Feather 7’3” XH is a beast of a frog rod (among other techniques). I used it as my frog rod all season and LOVED it….absolutely perfect and will be back in action for the 2025 season.

Unless I’m in the heaviest of slop, 90% of my froggin’ is done with an ALX Toadface. Versatile rod for other things too at 7’2”

I have and use both the ALX Toadface and Expride 73XH. The Expride is simply incredible.

 Expride A  7’3” XH is all I use for frogging and I’ve had it doubled over many times in the slop. It’s one tough, light weight rod that you can frog fish all day long with minimal fatigue. Also use it with a heavy jig and swim baits. It’s a beast of a rod!

I agree the Expride is a great series of rods, I have 2 other models. My primary frustration with them is handle length. They are quite long throughout the line up. Not a factor for many models, but those techniques where you walk the dog (like a frog) or a jerkbait, the extra handle length gets in the way. The slapping against your forearm/side is fatiguing/frustrating when fishing long periods of time IMO.

what type of cover are you talking about?  Walking a frog in more open water along docks and laydowns and bombing across the top of a mat are different rods for me.  I don't do much of the first given the cover we have here, but for that I prefer a lighter rod with a bit more tip.  For bombing, I want a rod with enough backbone that setting a hook at 40 yards isn't a question.

ALX Toad Face would be my choice.

I've really enjoyed the Dobyns Fury 735.  Its not quiet a pool que so you can whip frogs pretty far and it's light enough to not tire my wrist out.  With the warranty and general affordability, I'm not afraid to cast into the gnarliest weeds I can find.  I imagine the 705 would be similar.  I've heard great things about the Exprides though.
