Seaguar PE X8 - any users?

Featured Replies

I know its only recently released to the US and it is JDM prices, but we have a lot of JDM direct orderers on this site.  Anyone try it and can compare it to 832 or 131?  @bulldog1935?  The strength to diameter is pretty impressive, even after you consider how much 832 is underrated in strength (ie 10 lb is more like 15 actual pounds strength).  832 in 10# is the same diameter of 24# PEX8.

I've fished JDM Seaguar PEX8 in PE#0.8 - it matches the breaking strength for diameter specified by JAFTMA,  Basically, it counts as "4th generation" X-braid

Capture (133).JPG

I was talking about this on FFR forum, and covered the difference with 3rd generation FEP-coated braid, which is 832 and Power Pro V2 - both sold by "pound test" matching this table.

Capture1%20(18).JPG

1st gen is basic x4-weave spectra/dyneema (flat) - 2nd gen is x8 to make it round;

3rd gen is the same x4 or x8 weave with fused FEP (thermoplastic teflon) coating (Sufix 832).

4th gen X-braid - when introduced in 2018, it was $1/yd - made in Japan by Izanas for the different JDM brands. It uses a UHMWPE drawn center strand 60% stronger than dyneema, finer fibers, tighter weave, outer abrasion weave fused with blended FEP + silicone for improved coating toughness.  Harder, rounder, finer, more consistent diameter for breaking strength.  Each of the JDM brands/grades are spec'd from Izanas menu - fiber grade, weave, coating formulation.

The Seaguar PEX8 is closing out in Japan.  Hedgehog is selling 150-m spools for $13.  My experience, the FEP coating formulation is not as tough, especially, as my favorite coatings on Varivas Si-X and YGK WXP1.

Where I notice this is rolling my leader Allbright knots - the knots glide with my favorite coatings, even after multiple years of use.  I tried two brands that even new peel the coating when making my leader knot.  Brands that the coating has fished up to 3 years for me include Varivas, YGK, and Duel X-wire.  So I use the closeout Seaguar in bigger sizes for backing when stacking spools with my favorite Varivas Si-X or YGK WXP1.

Next time, can you be more specific?

So I picked up some PEX8 in the 12-days sale at TW. Not as cheap as noted above from japan, but it was down around 832 pricing for a spool (which has 50% less on it than 832). I was debating between this and sinking braid for a FFS minnow specific setup. Almight has some inconsistency issues reported so I went PEX8 in the 16 lb rating. That is 0.148 mm or 0.006" (GOU 0.8 in the table above). It's THIN! It says 3lb mono equivalent above, but it is more like sewing thread. Size A rod builders thread is thicker than this. Sunline supernatural mono, which is my usual mono and already thin, bottoms out at 0.165 mm at 4 lb test. This line is really thin.

Since I'm keeping it as a more open water minnow shaking rod I'm less worried about abrasion being a factor. I'll still be running a longer length of 10 lb fluoro leader so even if I do get into the timber it should be okay. It ties a heck of an albright knot- super tiny tied to 10 lb fluoro backing. And with a thin and limp as it is, I can see this casting a mile if needed. I'll be limiting it to 35 yards or so since it's on FFS and I top out around 90' range on a 12" screen. Can't wait to get this out on the water.

I thought about getting some too when it was on sale. I checked my supply and realized that I already have 3 new kinds of PE to run this year, the USDM YGK X8, Almight and another sunline PE. I was told by someone whose opinion I trust as much and even times more than my own, that it was one of the "best" lines he had ever used.

Empirical is always worth more than anyone's opinion, including mine.

Refreshing this....now that y'all have had some time with it, how do you feel about it - Strength, abrasion, wind knots, feel, etc? Anyone else, have an opinion?

@Hartwood71 - I've been using it for 2 months now, most trips. It is on a solid tip poison adrena and is basically my minow shaking rod. I knew I'd be doing a lot more of that this spring (I wasn't wrong) so settled on a dedicated setup for almost exclusively that. I was using 10 lb 832 or 10 lb 131 for that in the past. I'll do a better rod review in the other thread I made, but you asked about line.

What I wanted:

  • thin for the strength to not impede the minnow sinking as much

  • pink for visibility when I lose my minnow on the screen and have to aim the transducer where the line is going

  • strong and manageable on the reel

I think I am 85-90% of where I wanted to be. I went with 16lb PEX8 which is 0.006". 832 doesn't list a line that small (8lb is 0.007"). Is it THIN. It achieves #1 for sure. I can see the difference when I throw a minnow on 10 lb 131 next to it.

Because it is so thin, #2 is a non starter. I have a hard time seeing it above water even when I know where it is let alone finding it blind. I have to shake it and disturb the water to find it some times. The only extra vizibility I've gotten from it is in the rod locker to know which rod I am grabbing.

#3 is hit and miss. It is definitely strong. I muscled up a 9# channel cat on it last weekend and plenty of hard fought 3# smallmouth I have no issues with the strength of the line for what I'm doing. Because it is so thin, I was struggling with wind knots a couple trips ago. I've had to be more mindful about it but I'm getting there. Tying an alberto knot that day was killing me also. I think it was my tying technique, but I couldn't get one to keep. I finally put that rod away that day and retied it at home. So it is taking some getting used to, but I'm pretty sure I am going to keep it. To do it again, I would probably go with the 18 or 21# version for a little more diameter.

I've been running these since last August. 18lb on a medium light 2500 spinner and 21lb on a medium C3000, no issues to report I have been very happy with it. the 21lb was noticeably stiffer than the 18 when it was first spooled up but it softened up very quickly.

Thanks @casts_by_fly and @Peacedivision. Definitely helpful. I ordered the 21-lb. Could go either for light casting or spinning rig; undecided.

Will be braid to leader, either for light swim baits or strolling.

I intend to use Alberto but, but will be sure use extra wraps. Otherwise, will go FG.

Will report back after some use.

I am using them for BFS combos, 18lb and 21lb. very smooth casting, but my connection knot with 21lb will hit the tip time to time. I would rather use straight mono/fluoro. But the line is amazing. I still go for Varivas over them after trying them. SORRY FOR RIPED OFF FINGER in photo, As a fisherman no matter what I do, couply og my fingers are shredded, I call them fisherman fingers LOL.

Me love me some shredded bass fingers - I especially know it was a big day when I get neuropathy in my thumbs for a couple weeks afterwards.

That looks like an Alberto knot, true?
