Are You Mainstream.....??

Featured Replies

I pretty much stick to conventional wisdom, seasonal patterns and so on. That said, it doesn’t bother me one bit to go against the grain if things aren’t working out.

Like all the other older anglers ,I use a lot of dated and often discontinued baits because they work and are not used much anymore.

I don't know if I'm mainstream. I try to get away from other people. I fish from a kayak, which most people do not and that allows me to be alone more even in public waters.

I either want to pitch to cover or fish topwaters. It's a bonus when I can combine them, like with a frog or lizard on the mat. I would trade 2 fish for one to catch them on topwaters. That said, you gotta do what they want.

haha..

this saturday, i finally found a victim.. i mean associate to fish a spot i have always wanted to try.  we have to (legally) lift our kayaks over a gate, and walk thru a narrow opening to reach new waters.    we will have to drag our kayaks down a trail.  hahah.

solo i would kill myself.  i have a willing partner.  very off the beaten path.  the opposite of mainstream.

I would say I fish a combination. I run an old Triton with a Helix 7 side image unit, no ffs, no power poles, but I have an Ulterra. I pull my tub with a classic truck. I fish with mid grade rods and reels off brand braid but name brand leader material. I generally use standard technique sometimes in unusual ways. I look for accepted patterns as far as wind, weather, structure etc but I try to find them in places most people ignore or don’t want to bother with. I don’t fish community holes or generally around other anglers. I stick to a select few hard bait mfgs but I like them in more unique colors, I’ll throw a wide varity of soft plastics generally in more standard colors. I’ve only been mostly dedicated to bass fishing for 4 years now with varying degrees of success. I don’t generally do as well on days guys claim to crush them but I do have excellent days in what most label tough conditions. I don’t get 0’ed very often but it does happen.

I’m old ,Old School and know what works for me. Once in a while something catches my eye. But it seems  I always go back to Rage or Zoom. Proven over time. Plus I still throw Big Game line . And love every second of it

I'm not sure what mainstream even is these days, other than what I see on these boards.

I read that if Ron Lindner was catching fish on a certain lure, on a certain pattern, or certain  location he would change.  "How are ya gonna learn" was his reasoning.

I used to do that too. I'd catch a bass or two on a certain lure and immediately switch to see what else they'd hit. I do it less nowadays because I've been fishing the same bodies of water and have developed a pretty good sense of what they prefer.
