What Is This Box For?

Featured Replies

I just picked up a new Lowe 1448M. This box was welded to the transom. I think it is for a transducer mount but I am not sure.

I asked the dealer and he did not know,

I called Lowe CS and they did not know.

Does anyone know what this box is for? BTW it does not protect anything.

Thanks

definitely appears like a mount so you don't have to drill through the hull to mount a transducer but I'm not boat designer and I did not stay at a holiday inn express last night either.

Transducer mount would be my best guess also but I have to say it's not very well thought out.   It's not level with the bottom of the boat which would cause turbulence and noise in the sonar returns.  It's also over the bunk so the transducer would hit the bunk every time you load the boat.

I was thinking that myself about the bunk, but that boat doesn't come with a trailer so it's not a design flaw for the boat.  Just a probablem in choosing the right trailer.

And just because the block isn't level doesn't mean the transducer won't be.  Nothing says you have to mount the transducer bracket square to the block.

Yep if you mount a ducer there you are going to have to move the winch and move the boat back or shorten the bunk.

Moving the winch right now.

Thanks guys!

What I’m trying to explain is more about how the water flows along the hull. When the boat is on plane, there’s a clean sheet of water coming off the bottom of the hull—near the transom. That clean water is ideal for mounting a transducer because it minimizes turbulence and air bubbles, which can interfere with sonar readings.

The problem is, the mounting block in the photo looks to be installed about an inch higher than the actual bottom of the hull. That means water will start to break and spray at the bottom edge of the transom, before it reaches the edge of the block. By the time the water gets down to where the transducer will sit, it will be more turbulent.

The block appears to be about two inches thick, which means the transducer will sit two inches farther aft and further into the turbulent spray of water than if it was mounted to the transom.

The block is higher than the bottom but the mount itself drops about 1 to 1.5 inches so I should have no issues.

I intend to mount the transducer tomorrow so I will know if it is OK.

Needed to take a fishing brake this evening. 😉

That’s how my G3 is. It is a transducer mount. It’s to be friendly with jet outboards. If you rip your ducer off it what leave a hole in your boat. That is also why it sits up higher. That way it is closer to being flush with the bottom of the hull.

There is no real need to have accurate readings with a jet you only need a few inches of water on plane. Some guys even have their transducer on a slide so it cant take damage at all. IMG_2025-06-05-050447.jpeg.083cd03a8bced27444ca7f9b09e7fdc1.jpegIMG_2025-06-05-050525.jpeg.4f57639ab9890ad2fe717698ff10c00c.jpeg

I’ve got one of those on my boat too. It’s a transducer mount.

A good idea. None of my other boats had anything like this,
