DAIWA 20 TATULA SV TW 103 XSL- Opinon

Featured Replies

Hey everyone,

I’m reaching out to see if anyone else has experienced something similar with the Daiwa Tatula SV TW 103 XSL. I’ve been using it primarily for Texas rigs and jigs, but honestly, I’m not impressed with the casting performance. It just doesn’t feel smooth at all—almost like there’s some kind of internal resistance or blockage during the cast.

What’s puzzling is that my cheaper Abu Garcia (entry-level model) casts the same setups like a dream—super fluid and much easier to control. I expected more from the Tatula, especially at this price point.

I’ve checked the brakes, spool tension, and line—everything seems in order. But still, the Tatula just doesn’t feel “right” when casting these setups. Has anyone had a similar experience? Could this be a problem with the spool, bearings, or something else I’m overlooking?

Any tips, insights, or setup tweaks would be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

CRACKSI

In my opinion, both the 2017 version in the older CT style frame, and the 2020 version in the smaller frame are a little over braked, which tends to reduce casting distance.

BUT,.... I don't see that as a negative because I believe THAT is why they have gotten to be SOOO well known for being great skipping and pitching reels.

They offer heavy braking and great cast control for times when you are trying to pitch and skip in, around, and under obstructions and cover.

That being said.... That's also why I don't reach for them when I am looking for techniques where I want extended distance. At those times, I typically reach for my Shimanos because, in my opinion, that is where they shine!

My rule of thumb,.... Techniques where I want good cast control for close combat casting ( i.e. Pitching, Skipping, backhand casting, left and right hand roll casting) .... Daiwa. They are just more forgiving for those things.

Techniques where I am casting for distance and reeling or dragging on return (Swim Jigs, Spinnerbaits, Buzzbaits, Ploppers, Football Jigs, Carolina Rigs) .... Shimano.

Don't get me wrong... If you are a Daiwa fan, they have options for good casting (Tatula Elite, Zillion with SV Boost, Tatula 100 and 80), but if that is what I am looking for, My first choice of available options just isn't going to be a Tatula SV.

I run most of my tat sv reels with the brakes on 0 or with just a bit of brake. It should cast well and be pretty smooth - I have 6 of them and they all cast super well.

Do you have the spool tension set to just a touch of side play?

Maybe my reel have a production issue

Is this a left hand reel?  Do you have separate casting and paliming grips of the rod and reel or are you casting in the same grip position you fish the bait?

All my Tatula SV reels are left handed and I’ve never had this problem. Send yours in for warranty repair.

I'd get it cleaned and the servicer can let you know if anything needs to be replaced.
